I see more and more extreme posts about #cyclists going to strange lengths to clean and lube the chains on their #bicycles. Even baking new chains in an oven! Life is too short of this nonsense. Wipe it off now and then, add a couple of drops of a natural oil. It won't last forever no matter what you do it. It won't.

This is not about Carney. The important thing is this: "It's a cynical attempt by the fossil fuel industry, in collusion with state governments, to try to slow down this inevitable transition that's happening."

Carney or whomever is selected to lead the Liberals to oblivion can do nothing about the fossil fuel giants. They run the show.

Arbitrary limits that we were never going to stay below have been a problem since they were agreed.

We know what to do but won't do it.

We don't take action because of the power of those who pollute. They have been in control of the message for far longer than the Paris Agreement.

We're to have been "pursuing efforts" to limit warming. An aspiration up against the fossil fuel corporations and the governments they control.

Rather than focussing on things that are difficult to decarbonize, focus on things that are easy. But that would mean harming the #FossilFuel industry.

Here's a nice Inferior #mirage seen in this view of the lighthouse and buildings on #RaceRocks in #VictoriaBC.

The image shows (right) the view from about 15 metres above sea-level and then again from about 5 m (left).

The lighthouse is 18 km from the camera.

The air at the surface over Juan de Fuca Strait is a bit warmer than the air above. In this situation, there are refracted rays of light that are bent down and then up again to the camera, making the image appear below the object.

This is a terrible metaphor to use here.

"We should be able to solve all these problems at the same time, but we can't afford to take our foot off the gas on climate for a few years."

It's really too depressing. People are so short-sighted. I'm about to start teaching a class on #ClimateChange at #UVic and I don't know how to talk about this with the students without being angry all the time.

I was annoyed today that some sites (e.g. CBC) eliminate the Reader View option from Firefox's View menu. It doesn't even show up using Help, for those sites.

However, pasting the site's URL after about:reader?url= in the address bar works fine.

Sure, it's true, increasing the number of tiny poops of zooplankton could help reduce the harms of #ClimateChange. Maybe.

We know, though, that eliminating #FossilFuels will absolutely reduce the harms of climate change. We just don't want to do that.

There are 8 hours, 18 minutes, and 18 seconds of daylight today and tomorrow at #UVic.

The figure shows incoming solar radiation in watts per square metre measured here since 2004. The dark red and the dark blue regions represent the June and December solstice maximum solar power (all sky short-wave radiation) smoothed with a two-hour window.

Maximum ratio is 1304/468 = 2.8.

The ratio of the cosine of the zenith angles is 2.9.
