@actuallyautistic

On my stupid autistic brain.

Last week I received notification that the power would be out today (Tuesday) due to necessary electrical work being done on the flats I live in. Of course, stupid brain went straight into planning mode. What will I need to do and when. What steps will I need to take to ensure that I have what I need whilst the power was out. Days of making plans, thinking and rethinking what I needed, lists scattered about the flat to remind me, amended and then amended again. Endless hours of mental preparation and thought and all because of a few hours without power.

And then, despite the fact that the assurance was that the power would be back on by 4pm, 5pm at the latest, stupid brain was all, but what if it isn't, what then, have you thought of that, no you haven't? So, of course, I had to make plans for that as well, just to keep stupid brain happy and stop it from endlessly fretting and bugging me.

Well, guess what. The power wasn't back on by 4pm, or even 5pm. It didn't come back on until 9pm. Which just goes to show. Sometimes our strange and different ways of looking at something, aren't so weird at all. They can be very wise and stupid brain, isn't so stupid after all. 😀

TFW "overthinking it" actually totally isn't. :blobcatthinksmart:

@woozle @actuallyautistic

Exactly. Properly thinking something through, even the eventualities that don't happen, is so much better.

@pathfinder @woozle @actuallyautistic took me a long time to figure out that most people aren't always running simulations of everything in their head all the time in an effort to be prepared for things :blobcatblush2:

But, it's the obvious way to do things. Why isn't it universal? Indeed, it can be a pain, but so worth it more often than not.

@pathfinder @somecat @woozle I used to describe my job as "thinking up what the worst case scenario could be, and preventing it from happening. lather, rinse, repeat." Or monetizing catastrophizing, if you will. The problem is, if the tigers don't get someone now and then, people don't appreciate the work you do keeping them away.

@joshsusser this is what has happened to vaccination. You don't see folks who have withered limbs, etc, much anymore, so obviously the whole thing was a lie. 🙄

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic Not. Stupid. At. All.

IMO You have Jessica Wildfire calls Sentinel intelligence.

We are the people who are sensitive to our surroundings and things that are coming toward us in our surroundings, even if other people don't even see those things yet, and we are the ones who think out ahead of time what might happen when those things reach us.

We are also the people that survive because of this, and, were we to be part of social groups, we would be the people who warned the group ahead of time and told them exactly what would happen.

Often, we are not listened to. Often, we are ridiculed. And often we are told that we are paranoid, thinking too much, and that the worst won't happen.

Then, when the worst happens, as in the power being off for five hours longer than you expected, we are also the ones who still get stuff done during that time.

I'm kind of jealous that you actually got to defrost your freezer!!! My freezer project has been on my list for three or four months now. I don't have to defrost it, but I bought shelves and bins so I could organize it, and those have just been sitting next to the refrigerator for... that long. 🤣

It's not a stupid autistic brain. It's an amazing one! 🤗

@arisummerland @actuallyautistic

Don't be jealous of me getting my freezer done, it's been on my list for years/ possibly a decade. Since the power was out, doing it now seemed optimal. I must admit I have never heard of sentinel intelligence. But, I agree with it. We do tend to think this way, but like Cassandra, we also tend to be not listened to.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic It does make so much sense to prepare for worst case.

Why don't most NT do it? I guess most of them want to save energy. They don't want to think about things that might not happen at all. And, usually, they can rely on themselves functioning if plans change and they need to come up with a plan B on the spot.

They're certainly not as prone to decision paralysis the way we are. As annoying as having to pre-think through as much as possible before hand is, It beats that.

„It does make so much sense to prepare for worst case. Why don't most NT do it?“

In some cases I’ve experienced this I thought it had a slightly superstitious quality. As if thinking about and preparing for a situation could somehow bring it about.

Probably because we are far more prone to remember those times when we needed that extra planning, than those times when we didn't. It would create a conformation bias, that may make us feel to blame somehow. It's not as if we don't tend to feel at fault for a lot of things anyway.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic I had a very similar thing with my water a few weeks ago.

An announced day of hot water being turned off turned into 1 day of no hot, and a second announced day of no water. Then came an unannounced third day of no water, followed by 2 days of the hot water being colder than the cold water.

My entire schedule was thrown off for days.

Funny thing is, I wouldn't have to think about that much - Because I already have all the essentials (fridge, communications, minimal lighting) running on a grid interactive storage, charged flashlights in a few strategic places, alternate heat sources to cook and stay reasonably frost-free and I wouldn't even have to skip my espresso. We hardly ever get power cuts. I'm similarly set up for most other likely emergency situations...

I think this is the extreme form of what you described - I went through the likely scenarios of what could happen, then prepared according to BBK¹ guidelines and added a few bits and pieces for comfort. The vast majority of people around me don't even know this agency exists, let alone following their recommendations.
