[Night. Camera slowly pulls back from the front of a modern-looking automobile, headlights on. As it pulls back, we see a body lying inert in front of it. A shift of the light, perhaps from distant headlights, shows us a glimpse of the car's interior, revealing the empty driver's seat. The car then slowly backs away, making that distinctive quiet purring sound that e-cars are legally required to make.]
Narrator: Merlin Husk, age fifty-eight, has been many things: Family scion, investor, self-identified entrepreneur, actor, tyrannical employer, destroyer of communities online and off, unelected politician... and just now settling into his latest and final rôle... as corpse.
[Car finishes pulling back, swerving gently around the obstacle it put in place. We watch in slow motion over the corpse's silhouette as it drives off into the darkness while Narrator continues.]
What has happened here may seem surprising -- how could one so successful, so accomplished, be laid so low so quickly? It is important to remember, however, that for every action you execute, there is an equal and opposite reaction -- and status or wealth are not part of this ineluctable equation. The terrors you unleash on those below you will eventually swerve back around to bite you -- even here, in The Real-Life Zone.
[fade to black]
[theme song, opening animation, whatever; maybe a commercial for DOGE cryptocoin and another one for a "miracle" pillow that's extra-comfy because it's treated with a special patent snake-oil polymer coating]
[fade in to a futuristic-looking corporate office.
We see a man, at a desk, wearing a wizard's hat and gazing cynically into a laptop screen. We can tell it's a wizard's hat, despite being mostly white and having oddly large flaps over the ears, because it has "wizzard" written on it in large, futuristic letters, and also a few stars glued on.
Camera pulls back to reveal Anxious Underling, clearly waiting for the Wizzard's reaction to what is on the laptop. Wizzard bats the screen away disgustedly.]
Wizzard: What is this woke DEI bullshit you're trying to sell me here? You want us to delay the software release for "further testing"...
[He makes mocking scare-quotes as he says those words.]
...just because your simulations show occasional pedestrian impacts? What are we here -- an advanced technology company, or the world's babysitter?
Underling: Well, people do expect to be able to transport babies in our vehicles, sir... and cross the street in front of them safely, possibly while holding a baby...
Wizzard: I can't believe what I'm hearing here! You're fired.
(...do I need to write the rest of this, or is it pretty obvious where this is going? --W.)

Remember: Whenever they break a social contract, we are released from it too.
We have held back only in the expectation that they would do the same.
They are unleashing forces that they do not understand and cannot control.
They have always feared us, but only because they fear we would act like they do if they do not control us.
They never controlled us. We just tried to play nicely with them, because that's what reasonable people do.

Has anyone succeeded in accessing #GDrive files from a file manager under Linux?
I tried the gdrive kioslave (using Dolphin under KDE), but it fails because --
(Google's desktop client is only available for WIndows and Mac, and the Windows version won't install under WINE.)
I'm using the latest Kubuntu (24.10).
Context (usage)
@Harena is trying to offload a bunch of stuff from her #GoogleDrive in order to free up space, having almost used up the 15GB free limit -- but even after deleting a bunch of stuff, it only freed up a few MB and we're trying to figure out what's going on (and also it would be nice to have a more friendly file-oriented UI for doing this).

I'm picturing the redesign of government as something like a software team approaching the problem of designing and implementing new software:
To which I say: Welcome to the world of software development. This is what we do, and this is why we mostly do it for free.

This has the same shape as something I've been saying for at least a decade now:
(~1 hr ago) America’s Constitutional Crisis is Really About Technical Debt by @Daojoan via @theindex
What I've been saying is that our system of government was designed for a horse-and-buggy society. All we've done since then towards upgrading it is replace the horse with jet-engines -- "it's amazing" (I wrote during the Dubya administration, if memory serves) "that it hasn't come completely to pieces yet."
Well, folks, I think the last 10-15 years have let us watch exactly that in slow-motion, and the recent election was just kind of the final abrupt unplanned vehicle disassembly.
JW's argument is a little different than mine -- she correctly points out that there were deep flaws in the system as deployed.
I think we both agree that with proper code-review, these issues could have been patched before they started increasing exponentially -- but management didn't want its control threatened, and had become dependent on the backdoors it had demanded.
Like any badly-designed software, it put on a good show for awhile -- but eventually increasing load brought it to its knees and it is now processing a HACF (Halt and Catch Fire) inserted by black-hats through a giant unpatched security-hole.
We need to start building a new one. (I said as much 10-15 years ago, too.)

No, seriously -- why does MATE still default to thinking that the .pub extension means "Microsoft Publisher"? It's the extension for public keys. Microsoft needs to butt out. #softwareGripe

[verse 2]
When Lissa rode the ambulance
You sent her off to jail
The ride was for a heart attack
Your bill gave one as well.
You charged Scott seven thousand
which really seems a lot
when the place was on your network --
but the surgeon was not.
