What would happen to our society if a long-term #blackout occurred? There is a high chance that it would get quite bad very quickly. #Transportation and health services would likely cease to function within a few days, and many people would face food and #water insecurity almost immediately. If you're interested in more details, I have written a new post in my #LivingLiteratureReview about the consequences of #blackouts: https://existentialcrunch.substack.com/p/the-consequences-of-blackouts ⚡🚨📉

Excellent article, Florian. Thank you.

It all sounds very much as I had expected apart from the bit about my money/debts being safe at the bank. I had expected it all to disappear, which I still think it would as society collapses further in the event of a long term power outage.

@RichardAshwell Thank you for the positive feedback!

Well it depends a bit on how long the blackout lasts and how much of the world is affected. This was looking at a blackout in a single country for a few weeks to a month. If this would be regional or even global and take longer, the banks would also collapse at some point. However, probably as one of the later things, as they essentially just have to make a backup of their database somewhere and wait until the power goes back on.

@florianjehn

I agree with all of that.

As someone expecting societal collapse by 2040 (hence my hashtag #Collapse2040), I am always looking at the longer term effects and what I need to do to mitigate the risk. I'm resisting stuffing 10's of thousands of pounds into mattresses as somewhat impractical and a serious risk in it's own right.

Probably what I should do is put the money into a property with enough land to grow enough food to be self-sufficient, a well for water, and a house with a large south-facing roof so I can install a goodly amount of solar.

Another part of me says that I'm retired and in 2040, if the expected societal #collapse has happened by then, I probably don't want to be around to live through the trauma (armed and hungry thugs wanting to steal the food I am growing for example).

So I procrastinate and do nothing.

@RichardAshwell If those are your questions, my blog might be interesting for in general, you can find an indexed archive here: https://florianjehn.github.io/Societal_Collapse/

Generally, my view is that there is not much sense in prepping beyond have two weeks of food/water for smaller catastrophes. For everything longer you are dependent on a good reaction by your government. If you prep a lot, but your government does not make good decisions, you mainly buy the privilege of dying a bit later than the majority.

@RichardAshwell Due to this, I think the best you can do as an individual is promote democracy and state capacity in the nation you live in, as those have been historically good predictors of better outcomes if catastrophes happen.

@florianjehn

Yes, I already do this: PR, cooperation between progressive organisations and so on.

Unfortunately our politics is moving towards the right with the rich and powerful shoring up they positions whereby they can grow food for themselves and defend it with a private army whilst the masses die of starvation amidst civil wars that will affect us all.

I don't see the masses understanding what's happening politically, or otherwise, until it's too late and we are no longer a democracy, but a feudal oligarchy.

@florianjehn

Yes, I will look at other articles in your blog. I'm probably prepped for about 2 weeks already and will probably stick with that. My main aim now is to enjoy the rest of the life that I have left, whatever that may be.

@RichardAshwell That's a good thing to strive for. If you want to have a bit more optimistic vision for the next few decades and also ideas on what you yourself could be doing, I found this book here quite inspiring: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43218722-how-to-be-an-anticapitalist-in-the-twenty-first-century
