Two years ago, #EDPS embarked on a pioneering journey launching a pilot project of two decentralised social media platforms: #EUVoice & #EUVideo.

18 May will mark the end of the project. Time to review the results of this successful story.

@EDPS

It looks like it is time for a change in the EU. Everybody fully knowing they operate against the law while breaking GDPR should be in full personal responsibility. These people are mostly the ones killing decentralized projects where people control their data.

So much money are burned for senseless things there and they are unable to operate a few servers?

Hopefully media is making a huge story out of it so the election in June is a chance for a massive change.

Unbelievable.

@EDPS could you explain what this sentence means?

we have been unable to secure new ownership to maintain the servers

Ownership of what? Does this means that these were so far not your servers?

@EU_Commission has quite a few servers for their websites and programs so I'm having a hard time imagining how keeping two more services would not be possible...

Anyway, that's really quite sad.

@EDPS this is really unfortunate, to say the least.

I appreciate that you embarked on this project. Thank you for taking that risk!

The fact that all of the European Commission cannot find an agency to own it and continue maintaining it is unfathomable.

Especially in the context of how digital sovereignty gets so much lip-service from the Commission.

EC's priorities seem upside-down.

Reading between the lines, it seems that people in charge of funding don't understand the point of self-hosted social media. They just think "more/easier followers on commercial centralised services" and don't think any further about how those follows are manipulated and held hostage through algorithms etc.

By the way, let's not get too depressed about this. Remember when Protonmail made an announcement they were withdrawing from the Fediverse, but then they came back again a while later?

At the very least, the EU now knows that the Fedi exists, that they have an alternative if decision-makers start being uncomfortable with Meta etc. When people have tried something they are way more likely to do it again.

Closing this down now does more harm than had this pilot never been started, as it suggests a Meta or X alternative is easier.

Setting up and maintaining a fediverse server is done by amateurs across the globe in their free time using Ko-fi pocket money. That's not easy, but the fediverse thrives regardless.

Keeping this up with the resources at the EU's disposal should be zero effort. "Not able to secure resources" can only be interpreted as a lack of trying
