There seem to be too many politicians at every level secretly thinking "Well the politics is rough and tumble, but at the end of the day we can shake hands and agree to disagree."
This kind of performative disagreement for the cameras is totally unsuited to governments that pose existential threats to their own citizens and the world in general.
I guess a lot of them were brought up in more gentle times and are trying to take their cues from that bygone age? Whatever the reason, they are going to let us all down if they carry on with their prioritising of civility above responsibility.

If Trump et al. start breaking up alliances and/or encouraging unprovoked invasions of neighbours, it seems likely that currently non-nuclear wealthy countries may start making their own nuclear weapons.
Part of the reason nukes haven't spread to more countries is because of various alliances and security guarantees. Trump seems to want to undo all of this, as does Putin.
e.g. Sweden used to have its own nuclear weapons programme until it received security guarantees from the US:

After several months observation, I am fairly sure mastodon.social is preventing any @FediTips posts from appearing in their trending posts section.
This wouldn't be so bad, but so many new people (most new people?) sign up via mastodon.social and they're exactly the kind of people I'm trying to help with the guides and tips and support. It can be quite hard to reach new people and trends on mastodon.social could be crucial.
If there's anyone from the mastodon.social admin team reading this, any chance you could let my FediTips posts trend there?
(My other accounts seem to trend fine there.)

If anyone's looking for cosy well-run smaller Fediverse servers to move to, there are lots of them listed at https://fedi.garden
All of them comply with the Mastodon Covenant PLUS they all defederate Threads and they are smaller than 50k registered users (vast majority are far smaller than that). Also, they aren't just Mastodon servers.

Just had to unfollow a news source I'd used for years because its foreign affairs "analysis" has started claiming Trump must be acting in America's interest somehow, that he must have some kind of rational plan behind threats to invade allies.
Why do so many journalists have trouble acknowledging that sometimes people in power are just corrupt maniacs who don't actually care at all what happens to their country?
Why does so much journalism blindly assume good faith in people in power, even when it's obvious that there is none? Are they instinctively trying to suck up to it, whoever it is?

@pixelfed 's official Android app was approved by Google Play yesterday but the replies all seem to say it's not available in their country?

If anyone from Meta dares to show up at the next @fediforum I hope people treat them exactly the same way Meta is now treating queer people, immigrants, women etc.
If Meta do horrific things, call their employees out on it in public. Make them squirm. Don't let them laugh it off or claim "it's someone else's department". They are building the tools that are putting people in danger and this has just got a lot worse.
They will not change their behaviour if they are treated politely despite doing horrific things to others.

If any straight cis people are wondering why this is such a big deal, you might be missing the context that accusations of mental illness were used for decades as a way to criminalise gay people and put them in jail or worse (look up what happened to Alan Turing if you want to know what "worse" means).
When homophobic religious dogma started to wane, it was swiftly replaced by pseudoscientific psychological homophobia that persisted in textbooks until as late as the 1990s.
Homophobes basically just hate queer people, and look for any excuse to justify their prejudices rather than question their own motivations.
