I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Hi.
Actually I don't put description on the images I toot there, usually because they're just funny ones and it stops being funny if it has to be described/explained so the extra work seems pointless to me.
Would you consider that acceptable ? When do you believe it is important to describe images ?

Well, I expect people to do exactly what they want with their own account and to make their own decisions.

It's not about what you think. The blind person wants to know what the joke is.

@guilevi I've seen so many blind or partially-sighted folks voice their appreciation for thoughtful alt-text, I just don't understand why anyone would forget to add it. Just a few moments out of your day to bring a little joy into a stranger's life? Oh come on! 🤷♂️

@guilevi @3TomatoesShort Wondering how much detail is helpful. Also aware that my typing can be limited

At least on the server I'm on, there's an acknowledgment that providing alt text is more difficult for some people for various reasons, so it's not a universal expectation (and people often use hashtags to ask for help with it, too).
I just generally try to think: what am I trying to achieve by adding the image? Am I trying to convey information, or feelings? And I use that to guide where the details go, if that makes sense?

Interestingly I never did when I was on Twitter, but the social mores here very quickly indicated I should... and also Mastodon has a much clearer prompt to do so. Very happy that it helps read/appreciate the accompanying images (for me often charts)

@guilevi #altText has value way beyond outright blindness. If the internet is on go-slow [bad weather or peak times here], the images may actually take a long time to load or not do so. The alt fills the gap. If you're using a screen with low resolution the image may be so lacking in detail, the fine points giving it its meaning may be missing; a description can inspire a zoom that would otherwise be skipped. The same if your eyes are just old or tired. Don't assume your crystal clear gem is what every viewer sees at first glance. The alt text tempts them in!
