Hey European music unis/conservatoires, how about we get on devising proper DM/DMA Performance programmes? Cause uh... I really should be looking into applying for some, and the decent ones are currently only really offered in America, and uh... I'm not super incredibly enthused about the idea of potentially going to live in the US right about now. For whatever reason.

So I just got a rice cooker off of Amazon. Every rice cooker I've seen so far has a lid with two components, and inner one with some sort of rubber steam vent thingy and a (plastic I think?) outer one with a tight seal. The one I got today seems to just have a glass lid with a little circular steam hole, just like any regular old saucepan/pot lid, and no rubber seal at all, it just goes on top of the inner pot/steamer attachment.
Is this normal? Any idea on whether this will be worse at all than the other kind? Should I try to find a better one?

Went to see this place. Was told the rest of the tenants were not comfortable with a guide dog and that they won't be able to have me. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but 1) the dog is with me all the time and I'm happy having him stay in the room when I go into communal areas and 2) it's of course unlawful to discriminate because of this.
And also of course, no matter how unlawful it is, the only thing I can do is complain, send them informative documents, etc unless I want to get into legal battle, which I don't have the money for. Of course it'd be much easier to stay in a place by myself, but in London I also don't have the money for that.
Soooooo yeaaaaah, if anyone knows anything about decent accommodation in London...

Trying to find a place to stay for the academic year in London. So far, three places have been all great and ready to offer a viewing until I mention I'm blind. Then it's all "are you sure you can go up stairs? Because I don't want to be responsible if you fall or anything".
Quoting literally. I'm not kidding. I don't so much mind that they don't know that the average blind person can go up and down stairs without a problem, but telling me to my face that they don't want to be responsible in those words is amazing. Seriously I love this.

Oh right, apparently this is necessary. I'm speaking from my own experience, but this extends to many people in many particular situations that require accommodations, not just blind people. I'm not qualified to talk about those, so I don't. Also this isn't about those options not being fully available to certain collectives, it's about them not being available at all, whatsoever. This isn't pre-Symbian territory, you can't just learn the menus of your Pinephone.

Having ideals and being convinced of them is great. It's all fine and good. Until your ideals make you feel very strongly that you want to switch to an open-source OS (desktop or mobile) running on open-source devices, but you happen to be blind. The Pinephone is amazing! But if you're blind? Nope, tough luck, buddy.
Oh boy here come the comments saying "it's open-source, if you want accessibility you can implement it yourself".

[#]Blind/#Screenreader users: I'm looking for a to-do/task list app that is quick and easy for simple operation, but also somewhat feature-rich (at this point I'll settle for anything though), and has decent support for both Mac UI/Unix CLI and iOS in some form. I know there are many, MANY such apps. I can't find a single one that is actually quick and easy with a screenreader on both platforms. Which... That's kinda the point of a productivity app.
Microsoft To Do used to be perfect (though I would have much preferred self-hosted), then the Mac app stopped working and I can't get it to work again no matter how much I try to clear all of its data.

I have just experienced the most appalling refusal in my six years of owning a guide dog at Norfolk Daily Fresh at 14-16 Magdalen Rd, Norwich, a grocery store that sells Halal food. (Edit: I was not aware that they sold halal ingredients when I entered the establishment)
Upon entry, my friend and I were immediately stopped by a member of staff and told that no dogs were allowed. When we tried to explain that Sid is a guide dog and must legally be allowed entry to no avail, despite being assisted by an educated clerk at the checkout desk, we asked for a manager, who was also adamant on refusing service to us. His reasoning was that businesses have discretion over interpretation of the U.K Equality Act of 2010, which is blatantly untrue; under the Act, all service providers are required to make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers. [1] Additionally, the Islamic Shariah Council has stated that Muslim businesses should accept assistance dogs. [2] The manager went on to state that services in the Westfield shopping centre in White City London can refuse entry to guide dogs, which is blatantly incorrect from personal experience. Despite being shown and read information from a webpage with the relevant section of the Equality Act, which he refused to read, we were told to "leave the store right now". While I regret not recording this incident, we have taken their contact details and immediately requested written confirmation that they refused entry to a certified guide dog. We called after the incident to follow up on our message and received verbal assurance that we would get a reply, and not to "chase them" anymore. I will update if or when I receive a reply.
Any advice and help regarding this situation would be greatly appreciated as this experience was deeply upsetting and humiliating. I am prepared to take this as far as I am capable. Here are the publicly-available details of the business:

I can't not complain about the two checkboxes you HAVE to check on the Ryanair website to check into a flight which don't respond to activating them with VoiceOver or pressing the spacebar on them, even though they do gain keyboard focus. They just stay unchecked. How do you check them? By clicking them, of course. Or, in one case, by VoiceOver activating the label which is, surprise surprise, next to the checkbox and not associated to it in any other way.

I feel that I have been making lots of negative posts lately, especially about accessibility or challenges I face because of my disability. It seriously saddens me to have to do this, because I have always done my best to encourage other visually-impaired people to not only do everything they can independently, but to also know when to make use of the resources and aid that we are offered. It's been increasingly hard for me to stay positive about so many of these things. It seems like accessibility for PR is becoming more and more common. For the blind, but without the blind.

I currently find myself unable to read text line-by-line inside text fields, unable to use VoiceOver's Keyboard Commander, and entirely unable to use my CapsLock key at all. Why? Because I accidentally pressed CapsLock inside a password text field, and it broke all of this at once. I can't find a way to fix it except for restarting Mac OS entirely. This is the kind of accessibility bug that we find ourselves dealing with for years and years. And before I get people telling me that this has been fixed in Sonoma, which I haven't updated to yet, I'm not complaining about just this one. This goes for multicase strings with Eloquence, Safari not responding, some part of WebKit crashing and not letting you VO cursor through a page until you restart both the browser and VoiceOver, arrow keys getting stuck because of the QuickNav overlay...
Of course, the alternative is switching to having Windows Explorer not read list views whenever it doesn't feel like it, programs going unresponsive and taking your whole screenreader with them, focus issues on websites making you click incorrect links, security vulnerabilities that have been reported for years...
For a lot of us, it's no longer about choosing which system we like the most. It's also no longer about choosing which screenreader/accessibility paradigm we like the most. It's about which long-standing bugs we're willing to deal with the most. And that's really, really sad.
Sorry about the negativity and extensive use of jargon, maybe I should make a more accessible-to-everyone post about this. But I'm just so tired of dealing with this bullshit pretty much every day. Anyway I'm going to go restart my whole system because I pressed CapsLock in a password field so I can use my computer properly again.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
