TOSLINK is one of the very few consumer fiber optical standards. It transports digital, uncompressed PCM audio over plastic fibers.
Why not transport IP-over-Toslink instead?
It's a 1.536 Mbit/s data link after all...

A very strong talk recommendation from #38c3:
https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-beyond-ble-cracking-open-the-black-box-of-rf-microcontrollers
Despite the very unassuming name talking about "BLE", this talk is about something much more interesting:
Reverse engineering the Cortex-M0 RF coprocessor and engines in the TI CC13xx radio chipsets!
Those chips are basically little I/Q SDRs with a bunch of hardware offloading. TI keeps all of this hidden away very nicely -- but now they've built tooling to work with that CPU core & RF offloading directly.

Just noticed that I hadn't posted about this yet, I gave a talk about Blamba! (the GSM ringtone provider) at #38c3.
It's available on media.ccc.de now:

Seeing 3.3Gbit/s of actual TCP throughput is quite impressive, it's my new all-time record for WiFi and even better than my all-time 5G maximum.
🍿 ready for the introduction of MLO (aka 5GHz + 6GHz bonding) support, which should give another little bump in performance.
The 4-core arm64 CPU in the router is still pretty bored at 3 Gbit/s, so there might be more performance to be had :)
Having this run with the open-source/mainline mt76 driver is very nice. mt76 has come a loong way :)

Got a chance to play with new WiFi hardware:
BananaPi BPI-R4, mt76-based WiFi 7 7/802.11be access point.
Support in mainline OpenWRT is now good enough to "just work".
No MLO support yet, WIP.
Client is a Intel BE200 M.2 card, 2x2 MIMO.
Was able to get MCS13 (aka 4096QAM) working at 320 MHz, which results in a 5.7Gbit/s PHY rate and ~3Gbit/s of actual TCP throughput.
BE200 drivers on Linux still seem a bit wonky, "only" 2 Gbit/s on Linux.
Windows 11 works as expected.

Really quite a fancy new trick I've implemented (and now upstreamed in culvert):
ASPEED BMCs (like the AST2500) chips have an internal JTAG peripheral, which can be used directly from the host computer or externally via UART.
This means you can JTAG the ARM core running OpenBMC (or even the propritary BMC firmware!) without special tools or hardware hacking required!
https://github.com/amboar/culvert/blob/main/docs/OpenOCD.md
As a really nice added benefit, it can also debug the Cortex-M3 coprocessor:
