Four days into Turn 7, the map is expanding ...
I think by now we're applying every single rules bit from the original three booklets.

Turn 6 in our Diplomacy/Chainmail/OD&D game. The situation is tense in various locations on the map.
What can be done? Forge hitherto unthinkable alliances? Give in to the corrupting forces of Chaos? Flee and hide? Or attack desperately? There are portents of a major battle happening soon, while the true evil is still brooding and scheming ...
It's surprising how similar this game feels to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. This wasn't my intention at all when I started the game. But apparently there's more implied setting in those old rules sets, than is usually perceived.

Tonight's game was some OD&D as it should be. First the party of levels 1 through 5 survived an attack by three Manticores, later they explored the lair of eight Ogres. Carefully coordinated sleep spells and time honored choke point tactics led to some decent treasure, a subdued Manticore and two Ogre henchmen. They lost one poor halfling and never made it to the dungeon though π

By this point the Grenzland Campaign has grown to a geographical size, it just seems futile to even try to prep. I just have no idea which turn the players will take.
All I can do is keep track, update locations that where visited and let it run by itself.
I'm very hesitant to expand the map even one single hex, but it happens occasionally π

Two Chainmail games tonight. One was a bloody battle, the other ended in a surprising result with laughs and chuckles all around.

When trying to clarify problematic rules in OD&D I like to have a look at the literature that inspired the rule. For example the Chainmail rule about Heros being able to shoot down dragons with a single arrow is clearly a nodd to Bard killing Smaug in The Hobbit.
Along this line of thought: what is the literary precedent for Phantasmal Forces? Any idea?

These days I feel I have found my special interest niche in this great hobby. It's the ancient school 2d6 campaign games. Chainmail, Blackmoor, 3LBB, Classic Traveller. These games hint at, and allow to include elements of Braunstein games or Diplomacy with ease. Leading to the most intense experiences of verisimilitude and immersion I've had so far, even when compared with much more modern games.

Yesterday I took some time to pay a visit to our Friendly Local Game Store (which is always nice).
My honest plan was to buy that brandnew 2024 D&D Players Handbook. But holding it in my hands and flipping through the pages I realized: this is not my game.
I really tried π€·

Gestern haben wir ein Diplomacy-Spiel innerhalb der OD&D Grenzland-Kampagne gestartet.
https://campaignwiki.org/wiki/Grenzland/Das_Diplomatie-Spiel
Ich bin sehr gespannt, wie sich das ganze entwickelt. Wer Lust hat noch mit einzusteigen, es sind noch mindestes zwei Fraktionen frei!

The good people at Steve Jackson Games speak out about the economic outlook of producing tabletop games ... under Trump's proposed tariffs. Spoiler: it's bad news.

So yesterday we played a GURPS 3rd Ed. mini scenario in the world of Conan with @kensanata and agroschim (no fedi handle it seems ...) I set up this game to get a feel for the Advanced Combat System (think about it as a gritty skirmish system, GURPS the war game). We had two moderatly complex combat encounters with 7 combatants at most. None of us is stoked about this game now, but it was o.k. Here are some observations I find interesting:

Somehow the GURPS bug bit again (was it listening to @ubiquitousrat ?) I'm preparing a one shot game and have done a couple of pregens. It takes me about one hour to round out a character (for 3rd edition that is). While that may seem like a long time, I get a pretty good picture of each character that way. I get excited to see these characters in action. Also I like how the relevant rules bits for each character get written down on the character sheet. Almost like a playbook. Writing down equipment prices and weight also gives clues about the game world, right there on the character sheet.
From previous games I remember how actually playing GURPS runs surprisingly swift at the table, even with lots of dice rolls. I like how non-combat activities all get radically gameyfied by the system. In fact the majority of rules get attached to the characters, rather than the game world as in old school games. Character creation in GURPS is - to a significant amount - world building.
Then again, when I imagine doing all this preparation with three players at the table, it'll be obvious that creating characters will take up a whole game session of about 4 hours. Clearly that's not everone's jam.
So that's the trade off I guess. That's what they mean by saying GURPS is front loaded.

I'm reading Boot Hill π ...
"Turns should be weekly or monthly, until a situation such as a chase occurs [...]"
"Table top actions may occur any time two or more players have figures in the same area and one so desires"
(let that last sentence sink in for a bit ...)
This pretty much spot on describes what I imagine a campaign game to be.
[Table top actions = tactical situations played out with miniatures on terrain or chits on a grid map]

Maybe "group initiative" is not ideal for online games. Last night I tripped over this three times: called end of combat round before all players had announced what they wanted to do.
At least I'll try and set up a strong visual cue for the group of players, or maybe a check list.
Holmes initiative might help too: act in order of dexterity: first missiles and spells, then melee, then movement. It may even be conducive to fictional positioning.
