So yesterday we played a GURPS 3rd Ed. mini scenario in the world of Conan with @kensanata and agroschim (no fedi handle it seems ...) I set up this game to get a feel for the Advanced Combat System (think about it as a gritty skirmish system, GURPS the war game). We had two moderatly complex combat encounters with 7 combatants at most. None of us is stoked about this game now, but it was o.k. Here are some observations I find interesting:

@wandererbill We did some small stuff with the Very Basic Melee option (https://www.sjgames.com/gurps/Roleplayer/Roleplayer23/VeryBasicMelee.html), which amounts to the same.
But in the end, players got into the rules quite well (even the slower ones had their attack routines down pat), so switching combat mechanics was a larger delay than just doing the combat.
(In general, if a combat isn't "important", it's a massacre)
Also had less issues with the rounds than in other games, where people want to do all kinds of combinations. Here you can do one thing, and one thing only.
Not being able to do anything besides trading blows (even moving further) was a bit of a bummer sometimes.

@wandererbill @kensanata It's notable that GURPS came out of The Fantasy Trip, which has more mechanistic & detailed combat, but generally runs faster, and feels a LOT better. I've played a moderate amount of Melee/Wizard since the reprint, and it's just a fun tac combat game.
Into the Labyrinth RPG rules are lighter than GURPS and better if solely focused on medieval fantasy.
It's probably too high-magic for a Conan world as-is.

@mdhughes that's right, but also: when people sit down to play some Fantasy Trip game, they expect to be running a chits and hex war wame of sorts. When we say we're playing GURPS the rpg, folks tend to have different expectations.
At one point @frotz and I chatted about setting up a game of Death Test on our Discord, so maybe we still should give that one a try @kensanata

@wandererbill @frotz @kensanata Yeah, I haven't tried to set up an ITL-first game, and I wonder how rabidly players would min-max for combat instead of RP.

@wandererbill @kensanata
It's also important to build enemies "right" in #GURPS - it's easy to make mistakes. Unless it's a "boss" foe, I recommend against giving them:
as any of these can drag out a combat unnecessarily.
