Reorganizing my music library has gone extremely well, but after sorting through over 1,500 songs, I'm down to the last 150 or so that are just random singles and whatnot and it's become tedious. Better stop for the day and do something else before I just delete them all to be done with it 😆

Are there any reliable Canadian news sources out there? It's really about time that I get on this since I still have power to vote in federal elections Even if I haven't lived in the country for nearly 10 years. I'm aware of loads of smaller publications that are US-based, but none that are Canadian.
Edit: Should add just in case that I'm not particularly interested in reading news by and for Nazis. Just to be clear for anyone who thinks that's something I want to waste my life force doing.
Edit 2: It has been brought to my attention that I need to explicitly state that I don't need to be recommended the CBC. Probably safe to assume if it's an internationally recognized source, I'm likely already familiar with it. I'm looking for indie level stuff.

I managed to pull myself away from organizing my whole entire music library long enough to write my monthly #ReadingLog! I had to add a new category this month, so hopefully the layout is still simple enough to read.

Is there any media player out there that will actually let me view my music library in a way that's even remotely user-friendly or am I going to have to download iTunes again just to properly access my music? 😭

The first of what I hope are many lovely books that I'll read in Japanese this year. This one is a short stort collection by You Ashizawa. It's an SF collection, but it's my understanding that the author largely writes mysteries or mystery adjacent work.
I'll admit I was drawn to this book because of the compelling title and the, ahem, interesting choice of cover design. This is the first of anything I've read from the author, so it's all I really have to go on. And I was not disappointed.
This collection was filled with such a variety of different stories taking place of different periods of time, both in our world and ones that are parallel to ours. I could feel the origins of the author in mystery writing and it made all of the stories a lot of fun. Really hope to see more SF works in the future!

Very fun of my brain to have me dream about crashing elevators when I work in a building that I can only access the floor I work on by elevator ✌️

I spent the whole day at work doing a thing I didn't need to be doing because I misunderstood instructions. Luckily, I don't have any other task waiting for me right now anyway, but now I'm needlessly sleepy and feel a bit like a goof 😭

It's that time of year where I intensely regret that I didn't do any of my accounting in advance. Please excuse me while I weep and do a year's worth of accounting in one day.
At least this year I don't have to input anything and just have to send it to an accountant. But I'm sure after I send it she'll come back to me and tell me that I screwed something up somehow lol

It's been a great month for short fiction for me! Finally decided to subscribe to Clarkesworld and I'm on my second issue from Uncanny for backing their Kickstarter. You don't need to subscribe to either magazine to read their stories, but subscribing is a great way to support the continuation of these online magazines (whether the ones I've mentioned or others).
I'll write more in my monthly summary for January (maybe) and I'm not done reading my issue of Uncanny yet, but here are some personal favourites so far:
Six People to Revise You by J.R. Dawson

Never Eaten Vegetables by H.H. Pak

Home from work today because I have an appointment with my rheumatologist this afternoon and I ended up getting a super cool delivery (that I probably wouldn't have got until the weekend otherwise).
Awhile ago @ettaB_1 wrote a post about handcrafted hot water bottles from Gifu, but I didn't have the money and they went out of stock. Well, I got a notification on Saturday that more were ready and bought one and a lovely linen cover.
This thing is so cool! Everything but the rubber seal is handcrafted and apparently it'll hold heat for up to 24 hours. I'm so excited to try it out.
I love supporting craftspeople making awesome stuff like this. I'll also share the link for any Japan-based people who may want to order one!

I finally finished a game that I bought! It doesn't matter that I bought this game like 3 years ago and it didn't even take 10 hours to finish because I finally finished it! It seems that recording my video game collection on Backloggery and writing small updates every time I play has in fact been very motivating and made the experience more fun.
Carto was such a lovely and thoughtfully put together little puzzle game with really interesting mechanics. I really like that the puzzles are centered around manipulating map pieces, which are central to how the story progresses. There were a few moments where I craved a bit more, but overall it was super fun and the illustrations are absolutely adorable and I love the style. I was also very happy to see localization teams and play testers credited properly at the end of the game.
Overall a really great experience. It would really be great to see more from the developers in the future!

Are there alternatives to Google Drive and its respective programs (Docs, Sheets, etc.) that are suitable for individual use? I feel like every time I try to look this up, everything is really focused on business stuff. The fact of the matter is, that if a client wants to use Google or Microsoft, that's their problem and not mine, but that doesn't mean I want to put my own personal stuff there!
Thus, I am investigating alternatives and would appreciate any guidance the more tech savvy folks of the fediverse have to offer (unless it's a suggestion to host my own server since I'm very uninterested in learning how to do that right now).

Got an email from Duolingo this morning that reminded me I hadn't deleted my account yet. Figured out how to do it and in seven days the deletion process will begin. Goodbye, green owl. I have no need for an app that "teaches" language without meaningful input from humans. You will not be missed ✌️

Now that I also have an account on Bookwyrm, I'm not exactly sure what to do with posts like this since posting original commentary across three or four different sites is really too much, but while I mull over that issue, I just have to point out that I finished the most amazing book just now.
Time of the Flies by Claudia Piñeiro (tr. Frances Riddle) was supposed to be the last book in my #TranslatedLitChallenge for 2024, but through all the chaos of going to Canada I didn't actually have the opportunity to read it--which meant that it became the perfect book for January's prompt this year (a book you meant to read the previous year).
What an absolutely stunning piece of feminist fiction from Argentina. The shifting perspectives really worked in building up tension throughout the story and the footnotes (presumably of the original in Spanish) were an extra fun touch that made the story not only incredibly thought-provoking and enjoyable, but educational as well. I really loved it!

Started reading that article on Neil Gaiman immediately after waking up and only got through the introductory paragraphs before I needed to take a break--it's a lot. Within those open paragraphs is a description of an incident involving an outdoor clawed bathtub.
Yes, really.
Anyway, here's the archive link I'm using to read my way through the article since Vulture informed me the moment I used the actual link that I had reached there monthly limit... I have definitely not read anything on Vulture this month. Just remove all of the archive link at the beginning if you have an account with Vulture that you can read from.
This is gnarly stuff though and the article is pretty long, so read at your own risk and take your time if that's what you need.

Does anybody have experience deleting only their Instagram and not their Facebook account? I never connected the two, but I'm paranoid about deleting Instagram and it deleting my Facebook as well. I'd like to delete both, but I don't in fact want to de facto disown my whole family, so Facebook has to stay for now.
I've been trying to find a way to get away from Facebook for years rather unsuccessfully. Living 12,000 km away from your whole entire (not very online) family is a bit of a hurdle. But I haven't used Instagram actively in a long time and could easily delete it and not feel the loss significantly.

The rheumatologist I saw today was such a jerk!!! Like I know working on Saturday must suck, but you're the one who decided to become a doctor! If you didn't want to deal with people or have an unpredictable schedule, becoming a rheumatologist was the wrong choice. If he was that grumpy getting paid to sit at his desk and not even look at his patient's medical files (yes, really), imagine how grumpy he would be after sitting at the hospital for 6 hours during a flare-up caused by ongoing sinus trouble that limits one's ability to treat their illness (aka what I spent half the day doing!!!) Had a great time listening to him complain about another patient on the phone while I sat there, confused and not understanding anything he had said about my own problems. Absolutely the worst.
Really makes me appreciate my regular rheumatologist (who only does outpatient care on Mondays and Wednesdays, hence why I didn't get to see him today) a lot more and I'll be glad when I can see him at my next scheduled appointment to: 1) complain about my poor treatment today 2) make more concrete plans to prevent a reoccurrence of this confusion in the future.
