Toot

Are there alternatives to Google Drive and its respective programs (Docs, Sheets, etc.) that are suitable for individual use? I feel like every time I try to look this up, everything is really focused on business stuff. The fact of the matter is, that if a client wants to use Google or Microsoft, that's their problem and not mine, but that doesn't mean I want to put my own personal stuff there!

Thus, I am investigating alternatives and would appreciate any guidance the more tech savvy folks of the fediverse have to offer (unless it's a suggestion to host my own server since I'm very uninterested in learning how to do that right now).

@mollymay5000 my “personal use” solution has been to switch to using local LibreOffice files which I sync between my computers using syncthing…

Unfortunately, this isn’t a good alternative for most people… especially if you need realtime online collaboration with others.

I’m not actually sure if there is a solid alternative right now... I tried owncloud/nextcloud a while back and wasn’t impressed, but those are the only comparable non-Big Tech solutions that I’m aware of.

@brook I don't really need collaboration since I mostly just use these things to move stuff between my phone and computer more conveniently so I can skip the whole "email yourself a file so you can download it to your phone and print it" thing. That and my personal library file, which I only have in sheets because I couldn't figure out a good way to keep track of my library and whether I read the stuff or not...

It does seem like what I want isn't exactly achievable right now though 😭

@mollymay5000 That's the problem...All too often individual users are ignored as the big money tends to come from businesses and getting them hooked on a subscription. I've been searching for alternatives too. Proton isn't close to it (they do privacy well) however, they are in some hot water due to CEO antics.

Libreoffice, that's more of an offline tool that works well enough, definitely not what you want.

It's legitimately wild that another competitor for individuals that is focused on user privacy and able to blend with many use cases hasn't come up (at least in my searches). There's a niche that nobody wants to fill. 😬

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds It does feel a little strange... I suppose Dropbox was originally part of this market just for the file sharing part, but I deleted my account yesterday because I've literally never used it. It's not like I'm a heavy Google Drive user when it comes to my own files either. I probably don't even have 1GB of data in there that's my own and I've been using the same account for like 15 years...

I literally only have files on there that I needed to move from my computer to a different device without doing the email to self nonsense and a single Sheets file that I maintain my library list on (I should probably find a more reliable solution for this too, but well...)

Edit: 1.27GB used and 1.12GB is from Google Photos syncing with my phone lol

@mollymay5000 I personally use Proton for that purpose, as it allowed me to move files from my phone to desktop, or the other way around if necessary! There's also the iCloud, but this is not necessarily a privacy focused service, so only low risk things are moved in this way. There are cloud services that do the work for you in terms of hosting and have an app. However, I need to remember where my list of choices is!

Your needs are simply enough, so it would be easy to get a low cost cloud service with app to allow you to sync things from PC to where ever you need it. Despite you having a preference for a cloud suite (which Google and Microsoft provide, but are naturally untrustworthy).

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds That's only really because I often edit my library file when I'm out and running around or need to access it to make sure I don't buy something I already own. I could move that somewhere else. It would be a hassle because there are 1000s of entries in the spreadsheet, but well...

@mollymay5000 Fair and a valid need, since it would be hella convenient for you to be able to manage that file anywhere.

It seems that I might have found something, WPS Office does have a productivity suit with 20GB of cloud storage...

https://www.wps.com/buy/

Take a look at this site and see if this might suit your needs...

@mollymay5000 as Mac user, Pages, Numbers and Keynote do everything I need. If necessary, export to Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF. Don’t need Office or Google.

@mollymay5000 I've been running a personal Nextcloud server for several years now. Just my family using it. I haven't used office heavily, but found it integrates pretty well with collabora office (web-based libre office). Through the nextcloud Android app (similar to Google Drive), I can open office documents on my phone and edit them.

@dacmot I don't really want to deal with running my own server because I have absolutely no tech experience whatsoever, but it's great to know it's been working for you!

@mollymay5000 Sorry, I wasn't clear. I didn't mean to say you should run your own.

What I should have said is that in my personal experience with Nextcloud and collabora office, it sounds like it could fill you needs. To that effect there are many ways for you to try it out.

You can sign up for a free account with 2GB of space https://nextcloud.com/signup/.

They have a list of "partners" (not sure what the criteria are) https://nextcloud.com/partners/

There used to be a community maintained github list but it's been archived so may be a little out of date (linking to last commit before they removed it): https://github.com/nextcloud/providers/tree/7ce54772fdee748adcbafa2f6fcf46f6c1ac2479

Someone started a wiki post in the forums since the github repository was closed: https://help.nextcloud.com/t/a-list-of-hosters/193327

Finally there's a whole bunch of de-google/apple/microsoft services coops like https://facil.services and https://tedomum.net that also offer hosting in a more community type setting.

Let me know if you'd like more info, clarifications or some help.
