Upgraded a #Linux #PC #GPU from a Radeon HD 5870 to an R9 290x.

For performance? Hell no. This machine never draws anything fancier than a web page. The 290x isn't exactly cutting-edge either; it was in an old gaming PC.

No, it's because the 290x supports my ultrawide display during boot, and the 5870 doesn't. Previously, I needed a second display connected in order to have a working display during boot, and I almost never used the second display otherwise. 'Twas annoying.

So, I just opened up a #Dell from 2021, and it's got a #PCI slot. Not PCI Express (although it has those too), but a freaking old-school parallel PCI slot! On the same board as a M.2 #NVMe port and an 11th-gen Intel Core CPU! 🤯

Fun fact: there is no rule that says the EFI System Partition can't be on #Linux software #RAID.

Provided, of course, that neither the BIOS nor any other operating system ever tries to write to it. If they do, bad things will happen.

I'm told that nowadays #men often suffer from #loneliness because they are unable to establish romantic relationships, but this is somehow not true of #women.

How is that possible? Most people are cishet and monogamous, and in order for a cishet monogamous #woman to be in a romantic relationship, one corresponding #man must be in one as well. Nor is there a shortage of women; there are more women than men. So what in the world is going on here?

Obtain fancy new #GamingPC in order to play newly released game.

The game runs perfectly, but turns out not to be all that fun.

Start thinking about going back to playing #Doom instead. On hardware that is complete and utter overkill for it.

Hey #XMPP / #Conversations / #Gajim people, I need some help.

Conversations tells me “you are using unverified devices”, namely Gajim on my desktop. It wants to scan a QR code, but I don't see any way to get a QR code from Gajim for Conversations to scan.

What do I do to fix this?

Looks like all three of my old 2000s-era #Jabber / #XMPP accounts are gone.

The jabber.org server no longer recognizes my account there. jabber.unoc.net and programmer-art.org don't exist at all.

I know it's traditional to #overclock one's CPU, but honestly, the stock clock speed on this chip is already absolutely nuts. #Overclocking seems like overkill at this point.

Side note: since when could silicon transistors switch that fast?? I remember #Intel hitting a brick wall on clock speed back in the #Pentium 4 days and being unable to do better than ~3GHz. Now, all of a sudden, here's an #AMD #Ryzen doing 5GHz like it's no big deal. Must've been some kind of breakthrough at some point.

Welp, when I stress test the new #CPU, temperature spikes to 70°C, clock spikes to 5.something GHz 😳, and it stays there, nice and stable. No throttling or runaway temperature. When I stop the stress test, the temperature immediately plunges.

I must have installed the cooler correctly. Yay! 🎉

A mundane accomplishment for some people who #BuildAPC regularly, but I last did this 8 years ago, so I'm happy to have succeeded on the first try.

TIL a crazy couple built their own #laptop with a 43-inch screen. It weighs 100 pounds. IT'S HUGE. But it can be used on your lap…provided your lap can withstand 100 pounds of weight on it.

So, I thought I'd buy a pre-built #PC, because then it will Just Work™ and I won't have to fuss with parts failing and whatnot.

Well, from what I can see, if I want an #AMD CPU and GPU (which I do), I'll have to buy it from either HP or a smaller outfit like iBUYPOWER, all of which have a reputation of…parts failing.

🤦‍♂️

Welp, if I'm going to take my chances with failing parts either way, then I may as well buy and assemble the parts myself. At least I'll get exactly the parts I want.

I wonder if there are any automated USB repair images for #Linux distros. Run fsck, check for missing essential packages, check for missing/corrupt files, etc.

Windows has this, and it seems possible for a Linux equivalent to exist as well, but I haven't heard of one.
