Toot

Does anyone know if there was some kind of drama involving the developers of Sharkey?

Someone told me there was but I can't find any info one way or the other.

@FediThing@social.chinwag.org You're asking because of a reply from @Linux_Is_Best@misskey.de, right?

One of his older accounts, @Linux@sakurajima.social, contains some of his history and complaints with the Sharkey team. In fact, that's the first thing you see. Probably worth a looksie.

@FediThing@social.chinwag.org @Linux_Is_Best@misskey.de I linked to the most "historical" thing I could find with a quick search because I wanted to provide a primary source

You have any links? A while back I did archive a post for you with archive.is (or a similar site) so that should come in handy right about now

@tertle950@kitty.social @FediThing@social.chinwag.org

Those archive sites only keep records for "X" amount of time. I just tried to look up https://shonk.social/@Sharkey for example and it found no results. I am in the process of now generating a new snapshot.

@Linux_Is_Best@misskey.de @tertle950@kitty.social @FediThing@social.chinwag.org Huh, reading through these posts, it seems much of the disconnect comes from Sharkey still being run as a hobbyist project vs. users expecting more professional behavior akin to the larger Fedi clients. Maintaining even just a fork is challenging. It requires not only the maintenance of numerous crucial features, but also the management of an often rowdy dev community. On the other hand, it is software several thousand people rely on. If the software behind their instances goes downhill, at best, admins are forced to migrate to otherwise inoptimal software, and in many cases, instances fry from failing migration, people lose connections they've made while migrating, or an entire community is dead-stuck with gradually rotting software (cough, cough, Foundkey). Overall, it seems the two sides come from how strict people want Fedi's dev communities to be.

From Sharkey's official account:

I'm not going to filter my post. I'm not going to hide my post. I am going to cuss.

Skip this if you don't want to read it. You were warned.

@limepeep@kitty.social @tertle950@kitty.social @FediThing@social.chinwag.org A scammer is still a scammer.

The whole, well, we're hobbyist argument is bullshit. So is Misskey and so is CherryPick, but they didn't ask for money so they could host their project on a private server, then immediately use that server as their personal computer instead. Not even 24 hours after that server was online, Minecraft was what they were using for it, and the "Join Sharkey" website never did come back. It's still not back, now nearly 1 year later.

Sharkey was also asking for money so they could become an LLC. Not a non-profit, but a private corporation, so there goes the whole hobbyist bullshit, since they were looking for investors.

But even as a hobbyist development, they spent a good amount of their free time trolling people. Actually finding someone post just to harass them. At one point, even trying to DOX someone.

And when their bullshit was called out, they go around trying to claim anyone not willing to take their shit to be anti-LGBTQ+. That is more damaging to the LGBTQ+ community than anything. There are many assholes who truly are anti-LGBTQ-, and unfortunately, many innocent people who are wrongfully made to feel ashamed or worse, just for being themselves. And making false claims take away from people who truly are facing challenges in life. Furthermore, it gives a bad imagine and places doubt in people who may have valid grievances, because now folks have to ask if the claim is real or just someone playing stupid games!

I do not give a fuck if someone wants to say, "oh well, expectations were too high." No, there were not. Basic human decency and keeping your word is not an extreme expectation. The Sharkey Development took advantage of their user-base, laughed at doing so, and is no alley to the LGBTQ+ community, even if they, themselves, are LGBTQ+. Shit is just pathetic and said.

@FediThing I have vague recollections of maybe something, but can't find any mention of it in fedimins archives. I'll try to find out.
