The generation that literally fought and defeated the original Nazis tried to warn us after the war about how Nazis gain power, and how to stop them ever gaining power again.

It's horrifying how little attention we are now paying to that warning:

TL:DW - Everyone is in danger when we allow one minority to be scapegoated, solidarity with different groups is key to stopping fascism. Fascists know that, that's why they try to divide us against each other.

I'm not a developer, but for those of you who are, how close does Mastodon's official Groups feature look to being finished?

The pull request is here:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19059

Asking as a lot of new people have said they want to leave Facebook but can't find a direct Fedi equivalent to Facebook Groups.

"Microsoft brainiacs who probed the security of more than 100 of the software giant's own generative AI products came away with a sobering message: The models amplify existing security risks and create new ones."

"The 26 authors offered the observation that the work of securing AI systems will never be complete."

...

"If you thought Windows was a dumpster fire of software patches upon patches, wait until you add AI as an accelerant."

There seem to be too many politicians at every level secretly thinking "Well the politics is rough and tumble, but at the end of the day we can shake hands and agree to disagree."

This kind of performative disagreement for the cameras is totally unsuited to governments that pose existential threats to their own citizens and the world in general.

I guess a lot of them were brought up in more gentle times and are trying to take their cues from that bygone age? Whatever the reason, they are going to let us all down if they carry on with their prioritising of civility above responsibility.

If Trump et al. start breaking up alliances and/or encouraging unprovoked invasions of neighbours, it seems likely that currently non-nuclear wealthy countries may start making their own nuclear weapons.

Part of the reason nukes haven't spread to more countries is because of various alliances and security guarantees. Trump seems to want to undo all of this, as does Putin.

e.g. Sweden used to have its own nuclear weapons programme until it received security guarantees from the US:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_nuclear_weapons_program

We should be eliminating nukes, but breaking up alliances could just normalise them.
