I also think there's a connotation to the word #resistance that implies like-to-like confrontation - two blocks of wood pushing at each other, even if they are different sizes/shapes/densities. But history is full of resistance (whether against #fascism, or another malign force) that is like water. It slips through power's fingers or flows around its fist. #OptOut #SpendingStrike

It's Jan 19 in Australia.

Apropos of nothing in particular, I was thinking about how it's quite possible to march people at gunpoint into a factory or warehouse, lock them in and force them to work.

It's much harder to march them into an appliance store and force them to buy an air fryer. #SpendingStrike #OptOut #Polycrisis

[#]gardening #homegrown #OptOut #SpendingStrike Herbs for a session of pesto making. Clockwise from top left, mint, basil, parsley and carrot-top. We'll eat the parsley one tonight, with homemade pumpkin gnocchi and salad, and freeze the other three for future meals.

Australians should be angry about another year of climate inaction. Clear, accurate and compelling. My permanent #OptOut #SpendingStrike is predicated on all of this, as are my other forms of activism. Thank you, Peter Kalmus. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jan/10/climate-crisis-billionaire-class

Today's thought on a #SpendingStrike. I guess I've effectively been doing it for a while, as part of my goal to #OptOut of the capitalist death grind as far as one (globally privileged) person can.

But I'm finding it helpful to codify the idea a bit more.

I've concluded there are basically three different ways to withhold spending from the billionaire class :

AVOID - e.g. don't buy it/spend it at all. We don't need that "labour-saving" gadget, or disease-ridden cruise.

REDIRECT - e.g. shop local, co-op, secondhand, sole trader, farm gate. Redirect transport spending to an ebike, good walking shoes and/or a transit card instead of a fossil fuel car.

POSTPONE - e.g. rediscover old- fashioned thrift, like sewing on a button, using leftovers creatively to make a new meal instead of throwing them out, getting every last scrap out of tubes, squeeze bottles and jars.

I think these categories help me to up my #SpendingStrike game. "How can I avoid/redirect/postpone this specific spend?"

Always looking for more ideas.

Today's #OptOut #SpendingStrike action is pretty obvious - growing some of your own food. It can be as token as in this pic of curry leaves and basil on our windowsill, and some would say that really is pointless.

I don't agree.

One pot in a sunny indoor spot can be the first step in acquiring skills, as well as a recognition of just how hard it is to grow a meaningful percentage of your own food.

It can also be a promise to yourself that you will do more when you can - get involved in a community garden, have an allotment, set up vegie beds in your own garden when you have one.

I think I'm sounding a bit preachy here, so that'll do...

Today's tiny #OptOut #SpendingStrike action - reusable tissues, aka handkerchiefs.

I sew these by hand, using quilting fabric leftovers, worn out cotton garments or even bed linen. No need to be an expert sewer, just basic double-folded hem, and simple equipment - needle, thread, pins, scissors. Some of them are a bit crooked, sizes are all different.

If you or someone in your family has a beloved cotton dress or shirt that's not fit to be worn anymore you can keep it in your life for years longer, in hanky form.

I resort to tissues when I have a disgusting cold, but these are perfect for eyes running in a cold wind, random dust sneezes or unfortunate wasabi incidents.

I give them to family and friends, and am hoping to find more outlets for them, e.g. local library ("Re-usable tissues. Please take one!")

Yes, I do believe in the power of tiny actions as I try to #OptOut of consumerism/capitalism and enact a permanent #SpendingStrike.

Will post a few of them over the next couple of days.

Today : Cutting the ends off tubes of sunscreen, tootpaste, etc. Amazing how much extra you can get out, even when squeezing the outside of the tube suggests there's nothing left.

Last one in this little 6-part series - coriander. I have so much of this in various stages, have planted some, am giving seed away, and grinding in spice grinder. It doesn't grind as fine but smells so much stronger than bought version.

I'm sorry, Silver Beet, your method of going to seed is not very pretty. But it's effective, and achieves lots of self-sowing.

Dill! One of the most enthusiastic self-sowers in my garden. I've actually pulled up a lot of it before the seeds fully form, so as not to find myself with a dill farm. Made a dill pesto, but have yet to try it out - frozen for future need.

Carrots! I'll collect these seeds for replanting when they're ready, but there's another patch of self-sown ones that I'll leave to continue the cycle. Once they get to this point, the roots are too woody to eat.
