Hike this morning with my pup - managed just shy of eight miles and Luna was still sprinting after birds in the last quarter mile. I was less spry however...

My boys surprised me this morning by showing up unannounced about halfway through my second cup of coffee "Come on old man, time for a birthday hike!"

Grabbed the dog and off we went!

Did five miles in the hills of Mt. Diablo (~1000 feet of climbing), and had a great time. Afterwards they took me to https://mexxis.com for lunch.

A walk in the park in the rain. Just a light drizzle (A little rain never hurt nobody #Jumanji quote), but kept everyone away so we had the park to ourselves. Luna was sporting her dayglo yellow rain coat (safety first!), and sniffing everything in sight.

My buddy keeps talking to her, making sure she is calm, warm enough etc. while I call 911. We manage to get a last name out of her though not sure it is her last name but I feed it to the 911 operator and by the time the Contra Costa Sheriff arrives (kudos to their quick response), they have figured out who the lady is, found a sister, and an address. And her husband who also suffers from mental challenges so a welfare check is ordered on him as well.

This lovely woman normally has an ID bracelet, cell phone, etc but had none of that tonight.

Folks, this is your reminder to be good human beings. This could have ended poorly but didn't. This could have been my mother or father. If you see a neighbor or stranger who seems "off" (and it is safe to do so!!!), engage them, say hello. Most of the time everything is fine and they might look at you funny. But sometimes...not so much.

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

Tonight a buddy and I did a good deed. We didn't mean to but it just sort of happened. This post is not about the good deed or a humblebrag or any of that nonsense. Just a PSA to pay attention to your neighbors, they might need your help.

Out walking our dogs at night, cold, wet, foggy. Crossing a busy (for a neighborhood), intersection and we see a woman in her 70's-ish? slowly making her way across the intersection but something is not quite right. She is dressed warmly but her hands are shaking and she seems unsure of her footing.

We pause at the corner and she finally makes it to us. General greeting of "Good evening, how are you? Fine thank you." Something still not right. "Are you OK miss? Yes, yes, I'm fine." but the confidence feels off. The magic question that could blow up in our faces "Do you know where you are?" Long pause. "I'm not sure, I think I got turned around a bit. I just went for a walk." You can guess how the rest went.

Luna and I did a hike in the foothills of Mt. Diablo yesterday. Lots of fog but mud was not bad. #dogsofmastodon #hike #fog

Got referral to CAR T, first open slot, mid-January. Umm...did you kids not get the memo? Called back, told a nurse might call me back soon. Dropped a note to my onco "this is crazy" - got a call today, magically found a slot <2 weeks out. YOU. MUST. ADVOCATE. FOR. YOURSELF.

Whelp, tumors are back (never left?), yay. Onco taking my case to Tumor Board (3rd time's a charm?). Not recommending surgery, enough trauma already. Radiation also not viable. Referring to CAR T, will chat and see if I'm a candidate. More will be revealed this week! On the plus side, I feel good which is at odds with the evil inside me. #FuckCancer #CancerSucks

This past weekend I went swimming in the ocean for the first time since cancer and I acquired Oscar the ostomy. So many things I took for granted before cancer. I find myself asking "What's the worst that could happen? I enjoy myself?" #cancersucks #ostomate

Trip to Bend, Oregon this weekend for cousin's wedding - road trip with my father, great time. Two grumpy combat veterans with incurable cancer - we are "fun" company for sure.

Stopped by "America's Tallest Flagpole" on the trip. We both lost too many friends during our service, war sucks. #FuckCancer #MemorialDay #Veteran

Yesterday was my younger boy's 30th birthday. Of course I took an opportunity to embarrass him, pretty much required as a parent.

Backstory: the boy was at some kid's birthday party (maybe 3 years old?), and they had a Winnie the Pooh to entertain the little angels. My boy chased and beat the Winnie the Pooh with a stick. There was much crying involved (not by my son), and needless to say we were never invited to another birthday party for this family.

Fast forward to yesterday. I secured a Winnie the Pooh costume and chased him around the house wearing the costume and brandishing a stick yelling "I will have my revenge!!!" It was a hit, he loved it. I of course wore it for the rest of the party.

Had first CT scan since surgery, no visible disease which means tumors are not in hypergrowth mode - yay.

Confirmed RAS mutations - boo.

Onco wants to hold off on chemo for now, concern is it could exclude me from some studies/trials/treatments.

CT+blood work every three months to monitor.

Probably the best news I could hope for.

Surgeon cleared me for "light running" today so I strapped on my kit and did what we called the "Airborne Shuffle" back in my Army days. Barely a 15/min mile pace for 3+ miles that I expect I'll be paying for the next few days. Felt amazing. #FuckCancer #CancerSucks

Had my follow up with Veterans Administration today and they maintain I am still 100% screwed up so I guess this cancer thing is good for something. The PA was a very patient woman who gently and carefully took inventory of all my scars and ills. #cancersucks #FuckCancer

Finally back home after an almost two week hospital visit for my 12 hour cancer surgery - one week longer than planned due to numerous setbacks along the way. Managed to keep my prostate and bladder (yay), but permanent ostomy (expected). Met with onco today to review biopsies that are back (we didn't get all the cancer), and we are waiting on molecular biopsy results to plan next steps. Some promising new drugs for my Ras mutation could help things. Now focused on rest/recovery to heal up enough for chemo.
