This is how I read the news without going insane. I use a LOT of filters to protect my mental health. That doesn't mean I'm ignoring what's happening in the world - but I prefer to limit my news consumption and manage my exposure to bad news - I don't have to be reminded about evil billionaires and politicians every time I open a browser.

👉 Here are a few tips, tools and links I found helpful:

• Use filters on Mastodon generously. I appreciate CWs and correct spellings instead of funny nicknames for bad people, so they can be filtered: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/

I just wanted to check out Like a Dragon: Ishin! for a bit because it's on Playstation Plus and now it's 3 hours later and I'm hooked. It's really good - the perfect mix of a story-driven RPG set in the Late Edo period, cinematic cutscenes and plenty of drama, satisfying combat, unique combat styles, meaningful skill progression and a MonsterHunter-like weapon crafting system. And a huge variety of cool side quests and activities.

It's a joy to play and what's really cool is there is a context-button for dialogues, so you can learn a lot about the background of Sakamoto Ryōma, a real historical figure and samurai, who dreamt of an independent Japan without feudalism:

Wow, that's what I call a great start for PS Plus in 2025. A Sony flagship title 'God of War Ragnarök' and Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

Sayonara Wild Hearts got great reviews as well and the 2022 Sci-Fi indie game 'Citizen Sleeper' which I highly recommend.

This is so good, I watch this at least once a year. 👏 Enjoy this #Lego #Ninjago fan tribute video of 'Bet on it' by Stepanie Brown (originally a High School Musical 2 song). It's like a lipsync with Lego, it works so well it could have been an official Lego video but it's entirely made up and cut from Ninjago episodes.

Citizen Sleeper is a fantastic indie Sci-Fi RPG with a wonderful ambient soundtrack and it's currently on sale for 5.39 EUR. I really enjoyed the game, looking forward to playing Citizen Sleeper 2 which comes out in two weeks.

People throwing 102,343 plush toys onto an ice rink for 20 minutes. The plushies will be distributed across local charities, but... 100K of them? Seems wasteful. At an estimated 20$ per toy, that would be over 2 million worth of toys. Or do people throw pre-owned plushies? Do charities accept donations of used plus toys? They would have to wash them before distribution for hygiene reasons, don't they? Or I am overthinking this and need to lighten up?

I know I'm late to the party but I'm enjoying #SoloLeveling The story is a somewhat generic power fantasy (literally 'the weakest hunter' becomes super strong by leveling and defeating bosses) - but the action, the animation, the many reference to gaming and the voice acting make up for it.

One episode is literally named "like a game" and they've been throwing in every gaming meme and RPG mechanic you can think of 😄 It's probably the most fun if you've played #RPG #JRPG and #mmorpg before.

Like "There is a shortage of healers!". MC scrolling through party finder on his phone: "Looking for healer". Me: as a former healer main [Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme] 😂

Changed my Anki settings to FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler), the newer algorithm. Mainly because intra-day reviews seem to work better for me than just once a day (i.e. I like to do my reviews in the morning and again before bed) and people seem to have good results with FSRS. I haven't read any negatives so far. Let's see if I can squeeze in a few more new words per day and improve my retention 😄

Film has become so expensive, they have to sell/display it in lockboxes 🤔 On the bright sight, this German highstreet drugstore (dm drogerie) stocks 5 different films and a range of batteries often used in film cameras (LR44, CR2 etc.). Maybe something to keep in mind in case you run out of film while traveling in Germany.

I like the new voices and audio upgrades in Bunpro (a grammar and language learning app for Japanese). New professional voice actors, the female voice is crystal clear and that speed slider for reading passages is immensely helpful 👏 It's always reassuring if an app gets massive upgrades after I paid for it 🙏

Watched the new Philomena Cunk "On Life" and fair warning - it's a LOT darker than previous episodes (cw: death, suicide, close-up of a surgery, mentioning of a lot of cw worthy things). It's like someone at Netflix has decided to dial up the show to full Borat.

Personally I prefer the more subtle humor of earlier episodes. It still has it's moments but if you already watched "On Earth" or "On Britain" it can feel a bit repetitive.

Heads-up for parents: it includes a 30 seconds scene of a couple fucking in the background for absolutely no reason - which may be a bit awkward when watching it with the kids, just so you know 🙈
