Almost a double rainbow at Sunderland's historic Bronze Age site of Hasting Hill in North East England.

Back in 1911, an ancient burial cist was excavated which contained the skeletons of a child and an adult man.

The site was dated to the Bronze Age, which lasted from roughly 3300-1200 BC and consisted of six cremations and four inhumations buried in different parts, although the grave of the adult was thought to be the primary burial.

The man was buried with a pottery vessel, a flint knife, a bone pin, and part of a deer antler, and there were bones from various small mammals such as voles.

The small white object on the top of the hill is an OS triangulation point.

Just a few of the scores of Dachshunds and their owners enjoying a meet-up and walk along the beach at Seaburn, Sunderland this morning.

The popular monthly get-together is organised through a Dachshund social media group and is a great opportunity for the cute sausage dogs to socialise while enjoying some healthy seaside exercise.

The lighthouse on Sunderland's seafront at Cliffe Park dates from 1856, although it hasn't always been sited at this location.

Designed by Thomas Meik, it was originally constructed on the old South Pier.

It effectively became redundant when new, much-larger piers were constructed at the beginning of the 20th century.

It was relocated to Cliffe Park in 1983 as a monument and sea front focal point and is now a Grade II* listed building.

The seawall/promenade at Seaham, Co Durham in North East England, pictured in the moments of rich saturated colour before the sun rises above the horizon.

The beaches here (when the tide is out), are famed as being one of the best locations in the UK for collecting sea glass.

The footbridge across the River Wear to the romantic ruins of Finchale Priory, Co Durham.

Anyone remember the toll charge of 1d (pre-decimalisation) each way? A chap in a toll booth on the priory side collect the toll.

Always recall camping here in the Whitsun school holidays of June 1968, the first time I ever spent a night under canvas.

It was quite an eventful few days, marked by the assassination of one Robert F Kennedy.

At the time, Kennedy was running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Stockton's fabulous 'Infinity Bridge', spanning the River Tees in North East England – I love it! As for the bridge's name, it comes from the symbol for infinity (∞), which manifests itself when the bridge is reflected in a calm River Tees.

Installation at Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, Houghton-le-Spring, Sunderland. It was gifted by RJB Mining after the site was landscaped following opencast mining operations in the 1990's and here backlit in the sunlight of a misty winter morning.

A couple of visitors to the City of York, in North East England, pictured being persuaded by a street entertainer to join a merry dance in King's Square, much to the delight of others.

NB Cambridge Dictionary defines the phrase 'to lead someone on a merry dance' as getting them to do things that are not necessary!

Remembering Teesside's South Gare behemoth – the former blast furnaces at Warrenby, near Redcar. Used to love a drive down to this dramatic, other-worldly location, featured in a number of episodes of the ITV series 'Vera'.

These 'cup and ring' marks, on rocks at Lordenshaws, near Rothbury in Northumberland, are part of a site that includes the impressive remains of an Iron Age hillfort built 2,000 years ago.

However, the mysterious hollows and grooves are much, much older, carved on boulders by our Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors between 6000 and 3500 years ago!

The area contains the largest clusters of such marked stones in the country.

Where I live, in North East England, the evening's are already noticeably lighter with the sun setting half-an-hour later than at the solstice just before Christmas. Love it when the longer hours of daylight return.

Such a great location to catch a January sunrise on Sunderland's coastline in North East England.

The southern end of Hendon's promenade/seawall, looking towards the promontory known as Salterfen Rocks.

The New Year may have started off on a very chilly note, but we have certainly been treated to some spectacular sunrises.

A touch of frost at Sunderland's Northern Spire as the sun gradually starts adding warmer hues to the cold blue palette.

Construction of the new River Wear crossing began in May 2015 with the official opening in August 2018.

Meanwhile, along the riverbanks on the south side of the bridge is the site for a huge brand new film studio complex.

Old quarry workings transformed by snow and ice into a starkly beautiful winter landscape at Low Bollihope, in the Co Durham Pennines of North East England. In the warmer months of summer, the area is perhaps better known as a popular picnic spot and route that connects Weardale and Teesdale.

Remember a few press photocalls around here back in the day when PM Tony Blair had his Sedgefield constituency home nearby in the Co Durham village of Trimdon.

On a crisp January day, Hurworth Burn Reservoir is looking quite serene as it catches the reflections of the low midday sun.

Upper Teesdale, Co Durham, often referred to as 'England's last wilderness' and more so looking the part after a fall of snow.

Loved the momentary light show caused by the late afternoon sun shining through a gap in the clouds.

The River Tees at High Force, captured after heavy rain, thundering 70ft (21m) over the Great Whin Sill in Upper Teesdale – always impressive, even more so when it's like this.

This view is from the north back, accessed via a private track on the Raby Estate with a small fee charged.

Alternative views (for free) can be obtained from the footpath on the south bank of the Tees, walking up from Bowlees at Low Force via the Wynch Bridge.
