These 'cup and ring' marks, on rocks at Lordenshaws, near Rothbury in Northumberland, are part of a site that includes the impressive remains of an Iron Age hillfort built 2,000 years ago.
However, the mysterious hollows and grooves are much, much older, carved on boulders by our Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors between 6000 and 3500 years ago!
The area contains the largest clusters of such marked stones in the country.
