I’m glad to see just this tiny, tiny gesture of market forces at work. The duopoly still guarantees internet access is remarkably expensive compared to any other country on earth.

The previous years of slow, expensive, meagre upload speeds with ridiculous data caps (unlimited data just $20/month extra) was fine before AT&T showed up apparently.

There is no more certain sign AT&T will soon light up the fibre in our neighbourhood than Comcast’s fancy mailing offering “X-class” symmetrical high speed internet with unlimited data at a special lower price (for the first year.)

This also works if you don’t know a lot of English words, because, frankly, he’s pulled so far ahead basically everyone will be reaching for their dictionaries. Would be a terrific e-book for checking what the heck he means.

If you think you know a lot of English vocabulary, I heartily recommend Gene Wolf’s multi-volume Book of the New Sun: Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lictor, and Citadel of the Autarch.

As you might guess from the titles (!) Wolfe used obscure words (correctly!!) instead of making up new ones. The series takes place in a far-future earth (the moon is green!!!) and every page if not every paragraph is bedazzled with bon mots like some phrontistery.

“The French language is estimated to have around 60,000 to 135,000 words, depending on the dictionary referenced, with Le Grand Robert containing approximately 100,000 words and 350,000 definitions. However, to communicate effectively, knowing about 5,000 words is generally sufficient.”

Okay, great, if I study for another couple of years I might understand most of a Tintin comic, and maybe order a beer. That’s pretty much all I want to know? But how does that compare to Japanese?

After nearly two years of using Lingvist every day (50 cards/day) estimate I know 3,842 French words, or 88% of the words in any text. I thought that was… pretty good? But I wondered how many I actually need to know.

Descente was a cool brand when I was in high school. Haven’t thought of them in a long time. Turns out they own Marmot, and, surprise! It’s a Japanese company! An old one!

Feeling better and better about ghosting a Facebook recruiter last year. The news coming out of there is just getting worse and worse.

You’d be amazed how much trees affect wireless signals. That’s one reason cell towers are such eyesores, they need to stand proud of the trees to work at all.

AT&T crews have been trenching and stringing fiber in our neighborhood (at last!) but I’ve heard actually getting service activated to each home is not exactly a rapid process. So I’ll probably see the 5G speeds dip again this spring.

We have a 5G wireless access point for home internet (because Comcast) and it’s gone from 300 Mbps to over 500 Mbps this winter and I’m pretty sure that’s just from trees between us and the tower shedding their leaves.

It is not the least charm of Wanikani that, unlike Duolingo, they do not want consume all your waking hours. Once you’ve learned what they have for you, they’re like, “That’s it for today! Go away! You need time to forget the things you just learned before we drill you again!”

There’s also no stupid gamification or leaderboards. None of this “Oh! You are not studying during the approved times, so we will punish you by withholding fake prizes!” Like, why would you want to discourage someone from studying when they want to.
