Several years ago, our local indy bookstore invited in Norton Juster to give a talk, promote his new children's book The Odious Ogre, and sign autographs.
Odious was the second and final time he ever collaborated with Jules Feiffer as illustrator.
Norton regaled us with tales of (among other things) his youth, when he and Jules were roommates. The stories were charming.
When we lost Norton, I thought, "At least we still have Jules."
RIP Jules Feiffer.
Goddamnit.

First real snowfall of the season, so I went out to the fields near the house with @dwenius and our cross-country skis.
Skiied through the meadow where I'd found giant puffballs to pick and eat this past summer. Poked one of the dome shaped lumps under the snow, and... yep! Spores!
If I turn into a zombie, I’ve no one to blame but myself.

One of my christmas prezzies was a novel I’d asked for, sight unseen, based on a random review or recommendation somewhere or other.
12 pages in and I already know it’s going to go by too fast and I’ll be sad when it ends.
Been a while since I’ve stumbled on one like this; it’s a rare, treasured feeling.

So I’ll bet you didn’t know it, but Christmas Eve is also known as Second #Caturday. (And if the day also happens to fall on a Saturday? You can post twice as many adorable pictures.)

I came through the kitchen late, the house silent and dark. Someone had hung a banana from the ceiling. Our own version of billionaire art.
So what could I do but participate. I added some garlic, then went to bed.
We’ll see how far this goes.

I never watched House of Cards when it was originally shown. And then when Spacey was... when Spacey was himself, I gave the whole show a pass.
This past week, what with being sequestered with Covid and waiting for a bad person to be sworn in a second time as president, I thought I'd hold my nose regarding Spacey and give the show a go. He's not the only actor in it, after all.
I'm on Ep3 Sn5, and I would say the writers have thoroughly answered the question, "How can one person do so much damage, and how can so many other people who started out halfway decent be caught in that awful person's web?"
The writing and acting aren't brilliant, not by the standards of today, some 10 years later. I believe, when asked, I described it all as very "operatic." Then at some point, the show began using actual opera music for the soundtrack, and the whole production jumped the operatic shark, so to speak.
That wasn't the end, though. It kept on going.
This pattern rather eerily follows the arc of the former president who is about to be sworn in again as the next president.
From unbelievable, over the top disregard for reality, now morphing into actual threat and chaos.
As much as Robin Wright is sheer candy for the eye and ear, House of Cards was perhaps not the best choice for light sickroom entertainment before a much dreaded upcoming inauguration.
At least I can say I'm bracing myself for impact.

On the day before I tested positive for The Plague, I took a stroll in our local nature preserve.
I walked into the preserve for about half an hour, saw a LOT of bear poop, and decided it might be wise to head back the other way.
As I was walking back, I thought to myself, "Huh, sure is quiet now. Not much bird chatter."
I no sooner had that thought then an enormous and beautiful Barred Owl swooped silently through the trees ahead of me on the trail, from right to left.
How do they DO that, fly so SILENTLY? (Yes, I know, it's due to their novel wing and feather design; hush, and let's just marvel for a moment, shall we.)
They perched facing away from me in a bare oak, then swiveled their head all the way around backwards to keep an eye on me. Like they do.
We both stood still and regarded each other for several minutes.
At last, a clueless songbird went dipping and fluttering past, too quick to identify. As it neared the owl, the owl gave a mighty shrug and fluffed its wings away from its body momentarily. The songbird startled in midair and made a sharp right-hand turn away from the owl. You could almost hear their little bird-brakes squealing.
I laughed out loud, shattering the moment.
As I resumed my walking, the Barred Owl kept their gaze locked on me. I was glad to be much larger than a songbird.
