Toot

I never watched House of Cards when it was originally shown. And then when Spacey was... when Spacey was himself, I gave the whole show a pass.

This past week, what with being sequestered with Covid and waiting for a bad person to be sworn in a second time as president, I thought I'd hold my nose regarding Spacey and give the show a go. He's not the only actor in it, after all.

I'm on Ep3 Sn5, and I would say the writers have thoroughly answered the question, "How can one person do so much damage, and how can so many other people who started out halfway decent be caught in that awful person's web?"

The writing and acting aren't brilliant, not by the standards of today, some 10 years later. I believe, when asked, I described it all as very "operatic." Then at some point, the show began using actual opera music for the soundtrack, and the whole production jumped the operatic shark, so to speak.

That wasn't the end, though. It kept on going.

This pattern rather eerily follows the arc of the former president who is about to be sworn in again as the next president.

From unbelievable, over the top disregard for reality, now morphing into actual threat and chaos.

As much as Robin Wright is sheer candy for the eye and ear, House of Cards was perhaps not the best choice for light sickroom entertainment before a much dreaded upcoming inauguration.

At least I can say I'm bracing myself for impact.
