Who leaves these messages for me? At least someone still writes letters.

(It's probably pine bark beetles.)

It's been above freezing for over 24 hours! I went for a short walk in the woods and saw the first arthropods I've seen in a while: some little midges bobbing up and down in a sunbeam and an wicked little spider who came to dangle from my hat by a thread. Also, some kind turkey left me a nice feather beside the creek. A good day of socializing all around.

I just want to note that it's cold as a witch's brass monkey here this morning. It's 6 degrees F! I know that's a balmy summer day for you northerners, but it's pretty darn cold for Virginia.

Following up on my earlier post about the new-to-me clubmoss, here are some pictures. iNaturalist thinks it's Dendrolycopodium obscurum.

The clubmoss I usually see in our woods is Diphasiastrum digitatum, and I've posted about it before, here:

Here are pictures of the new one.

I went walking in the woods this afternoon and explored a little further than usual, following a creek upstream around a few twisty bends. The creek looks beautiful today. The ice is melting and everything is sparkling in the sun.

I crossed back over the creek and headed home through a part of our neighbor's woods, and I saw a big patch of clubmoss. We have lots of clubmoss in our woods, but this looked different. It turns out to be a whole different species! I might post pictures later.

Today's dinner-cooking music:

Sarah Vaughan's self-titled 1955 album. I've had the LP for decades, played it until I wore it out, then bought a CD version. It's a perfect album in every way.

If you don't believe me, here's April in Paris:

Earlier tonight while washing my hands I felt a lump of something between my palms. It turned out to be a very wet, soapy, confused stinkbug who probably fell into my hand from the underside of the soap dispenser. I dried him off and set him beside the sink, where he's currently waggling his antennae and contemplating the very clean hand of fate. To my surprise, he didn't stink at me (too shocked?). Anyway, if you need someone to bathe your stinkbugs, apparently I'm your guy.

Whose doorstep is this? The hole is about the diameter of a soft drink can. It's in the bank of a small creek. The hole is half-filled with water. Come out so I can see you!

Today's dinner-cooking #music:

"My I'm Large" by The Bobs

I love these guys so much! Back in the early 90s I heard them on the radio while traveling, then when I got home I found information on a new-fangled thing called the "world wide web" about how to order their CDs. We mailed off a check ("Please find enclosed...") and ordered their first four albums.

We listened to these CDs (and others bought as they came out) continuously through the rest of the 20th century.
