FWIW, my name is very, very common, there is even a freaking politician Nina Kalinina who literally ran in a major election... And even she doesn't have a Wikipedia page yet. At least there's Nina Kalinina from Alice Gear Aegis https://alicegearaegis.fandom.com/wiki/Nina_Kalinina

Someone somewhere on the nets:

Nina Kalinina?
I don't know this author, or her bona fides, and neither, it seems, does Wikipedia.

My mom just randomly shared a very old Soviet book with me, sub-titled "DIY tools". It starts with silly things, like batteries and electric engines, but then suddenly the last half of the book becomes about building a film movie camera AND an animation desk. Because of course if you're into DIY you'd want a DIY anime. Right?!

The book explains DIY film development, but unfortunately doesn't offer a recipe for a DIY film.

Oh wait, right before this it talks about DIY'ing an X-ray machine out of a light bulb. It recommends testing the machine on your own hands. Alas, they don't explain how to make a screen for the machine, saying you can just buy it in a pharmacy.

The book is "Svoimi rukami" (by your own hands) by Pomerantsev.

Speaking of OPL2/OPL3: FM synthesis is magic. It is very hard to make the FM channel sound the way you want, and it is even harder to do so in one or two commands.

So I think this is likely the reason why lots of games using OPL2/Adlib sound the way they do: if you are a traditional composer, your best bet is to get a bank of instruments from Adlib and pretend you have MIDI. They all sound same-y and flat, but at least you can convert your score into a game soundtrack on time, without any need to understand what commands are supported by the chip.

Thank you all for the support and kind words! I managed to distract myself with some OPL3 programming, after all. It's far from perfect, but it's starting to take some shape of music

Turns out, "vlnpizz1" in AdLib soundbank is not "vulnerable pizza", but "violin pizzicato"

Gasp, shock, horror. What bothers me is not the malware in Google ads (we all are used to this, right?), but the fact that the URL displayed in the Google ads can be edited by the ad creator at will.

TIL Japanese schools still use RYB colour model and sometimes say the three primary colours are red, yellow and blue. Just like the traffic light colours - 赤、黄、青, very easy to remember 😳

Science class problem:

How many amps do I need to supply to my FireWire cable so it would stop being false advertisment? The wire is 22 AWG copper, 2 meter long, and the coating is PVC (assume 250°C as the ignition temperature).

Wth, Mastodon web app (glitch-soc) makes me feel very stupid:/ Great UX; I can't find how I can block words/hashtags. The app has three places with settings (two of those have gears on the icons), and it's not in any of those. Not next to the blocked accounts, either

Edit: found it, it was in hidden behind a "burger" in one of the "gears". Mmmm, peak UI

Product description from a website: is a cloud-based management system that offers a modern, user-centric experience, mobile...

Typical product usage: something.something.gov.uk/cgi-bin/ProductName.exe/

Aah, I finally bothered to figure out why dark mode makes me feel dizzy. Of course that's because I have astigmatism.

Naturally, there are plenty of people who struggle with the light mode... So much for "<dark/light> mode is superior to <light/dark> mode" :D

It's been almost 50 years since the first issue of the Byte magazines, and the headlines are still (more or less) relevant.
