Aah, I finally bothered to figure out why dark mode makes me feel dizzy. Of course that's because I have astigmatism.
Naturally, there are plenty of people who struggle with the light mode... So much for "<dark/light> mode is superior to <light/dark> mode" :D

@nina_kali_nina The right mode is superior. And "right" is an individual thing, it's just nice there's mostly a choice nowadays.

@nina_kali_nina True. Visually I prefer light mode, but recent eye problems for which I'm awaiting treatment mean I have difficulty reading it now. Sometimes I have to skip reading web sites that don't have a dark mode, or increase the text until the layout breaks.

@cyningstan @nina_kali_nina i can’t use computers without dark mode indoors due to a botched scleral buckle + vitrectomy surgery in 2014 — cannot recommend dark reader enough. it exists everywhere! even ios. most websites don’t have their own native dark mode and probably never will. many (like github) are broken because certain subdomains don’t respect the setting.
i was surprised to find i can’t use dark mode outdoors for the same reason i can’t use light mode indoors. but knowing makes all the difference. lots of experimentation and plenty of “look into the distance” eyeball breaks have helped me regain use of computers.
good luck to you both! vision disabilities suck. :(

@nina_kali_nina I want both modes to exist. As someone who practically needs dark mode, I would never want light mode to disappear.

@nina_kali_nina I have strong astigmatism and dark mode is best for me. So depends on people I think. Depends on your country but I have glasses that fix it all and were free.

@cpontvieux I wear glasses that help, and while I don't have any double vision with them, light text on dark background still makes me dizzy. It's generally okay with CRTs, and absolutely terrible on LED displays

@nina_kali_nina This is why I call out people who make fun of people who use light mode. It’s an accessibility thing, and people should use what works for them! :)
