Distracting myself by trying to do a calculation that has open-source code! ...but only in fortran.
I guess it's time to figure out if I can compile fortran on this nice shiny new laptop? Ick.

Need another distraction? A recording of my talk about space junk falling on Saskatchewan for the Toronto RASC amateur astronomy club is now posted, hosted by @AstroHyde: https://www.youtube.com/live/6MDI7rEgb6g?si=rqEfTHJw9zqWN7qV
(Ok it's not that much of a distraction because it revolves around SpaceX and awful billionaires, but it's a good story, at least!)
They are giving me a small honorarium for my talk (which is super nice, I always give talks for free), I'll donate it to World Central Kitchen https://donate.wck.org/give/499865/#!/donation/checkout?c_src=navbar

In case you need a silly distraction, my sibling found this book in a free library and sent me a picture. This has to be high in the running for "Best Physics Textbook Cover Ever"

The horse came outside the barn, stood there in the snow and whinnied, then turned around and walked right back in. I had the goats in 2 separate stalls, but the first batch of goats I let out just piled in to the other stall, and then the horse walked in too, so now everyone is in the same stall. (It looks super crowded, but they actually have plenty of room to spread out, they just don't want to).
So... I put a whole bunch of hay in there and I'll try letting them out again this afternoon.

Wild to be dealing with these ridiculous cold temperatures while keeping an eye on the latest red flag warning in LA where my parents are. I hope they don't have to evacuate again... stay safe, LA!

The official weather report from Regina this morning is -47 with windchill. So, no buses, but public schools are still open (my partner teaches at a tribal school, they are being much more reasonable and just cancelling for the day).
The roads are not closed (unlike when the buses were cancelled on Friday), so as long as one of the cars start, we'll bring our kids to school.
Animals are still closed up in the barn. I'll let them out into the bigger pen once the sun comes up.

Tomorrow is a pretty light day for me, work-wise. I almost wish it was a really busy day because I will badly need distraction and things that I care about to focus on...
"Fortunately," it looks like the windchill in the morning will be well below the -45C bus cutoff, so I'll probably have to drive my kids to school (buses get cancelled, but schools don't). Of course, that depends on the car actually starting.... yay, distraction?

Merry Christmas, goats!
Every year, an acquaintance texts us sometime in January and asks if we want their Christmas tree for the goats. The goats love the little change in diet so much that they even came out (briefly) in the -40 windchill to sample, before going back to snuggle in the straw in the barn.

I haven't heard definite reports yet on whether there was any property damage on the ground from the latest SpaceX explosion, but here's what's really wild: the US government is absolutely liable for any and all damage on the ground outside the US, for any launches from US territory, even private company launches.
Space law is weird already, and it's only going to get weirder as commercial launches push way beyond the Apollo-era Space Liability Convention and Outer Space Treaty.

Oh my, windchills close to -50 tomorrow night. On the bright side, it's great that very cold temperatures do still happen some places on Earth sometimes, I guess?

HA HA HA just kidding. That is WAY too cold to harvest willows. Dogs got a very quick walk, I checked on the goats, and collected the few eggs that weren't frozen yet. Now thawing my fingers and toes, and I guess I'll be doing some knitting rather than basket-making this afternoon!

Now I'm trying to convince myself to go outside. The windchill is "up" to -40 right now (according to closest weather station) and this is the warmest it will be all day, possibly warmest it will be for the next 3 days.
Time to put on alllll the clothes layers and go harvest more willows and walk the dogs so I can stay inside for the rest of the day and make pretty things...

Well, super rude email from an elon bro in my work email inbox, so I guess that interview must be published somewhere
Oh here it is! Yup, I totally stand by the quote the author picked for me. https://www.thestar.com/news/world/united-states/spacex-s-starship-rocket-exploded-again-elon-musk-called-it-entertainment-but-should-we-be/article_89e9d122-d513-11ef-bd3b-db191f8a4e87.html

One of my meetings is the first PhD committee meeting for a student doing particle physics. I am now frantically googling all the words in the title of her first paper because although I am a professor in a physics department, physics is HUGE and this is WAY outside what I study.
Ok what the hell is a parton... no not Dolly, thanks DDG... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parton_(particle_physics)
Oh a thing with lots of hard math that Feynman proposed. Boy it's going to be a long day.

Really really glad I can do all my meetings today on Zoom!
Blue = "travel not recommended"
Red = "road closed"
There were some giant drifts out in the barnyard which the goats were extremely annoyed about climbing over (come on, you're GOATS! You can climb over things!) But I still have power despite all the wind, so yay, work from home day (with kids home too, since the buses aren't running)

I was super excited that only 1 person showed up to the 8pm research group meeting (8pm my time because international collaborations across many times zones are HARD).
Had a nice chat, didn't have to lead a meeting, and now I can go to bed early. Mission accomplished!
Man, I am super burned out...need to work on that. Not having 8pm meetings would help, but then the NZers would have meetings only at 3am and that's way crappier... sigh.
