In case you need a silly distraction, my sibling found this book in a free library and sent me a picture. This has to be high in the running for "Best Physics Textbook Cover Ever"

@sundogplanets back in about this time, I lived in the UK, and the Open University had math professors that looked like the guy on the right. (This was in the days when the BBC didn't broadcast all night, and because I was a night owl, I watched Open University lectures because they used that spare broadcast time.)

A bit of a tangent, but which are the not-free libraries?

@DavidM_yeg ohhhh yeah, I specifically meant those little boxes people set up with free books. Not a library-library...

@sundogplanets I originally presumed this might be a comb-bound photocopy of an original work, with a little artistic license by whomever did it, but I looked up the book, and believe this is original.
This book was printed (probably in this form) at Springfield (Mass.) College in 1973. The joke might well be the author's own, and likely plays on popular academic stereotypes of college 'hippies' of the time. The implication being that math is 'cool'. Which of course it is.

@sundogplanets How it was made:
The card cover was made in sepia on manila cardstock by an offset process. The black text is an offset overlay. (2nd pass) The original 'talk box' text was typed -- looks like 12-pitch Elite to me. The talk balloons were hand-drawn around the typed text as part of the overlay image, along with all the text. The image could have come from anywhere, but possibly from that campus. (You'd have to look inside to see if there's a credit, but there may not be.)

There is an INSANE video from the same era that's shown in intro bio classes in which hippies run around a field illustrating protein synthesis with a voiceover description based on Jabberwocky.
Same energy.
