Im not an economist, but surely inflation not going up as much anymore isn't a sign of the end of the cost of living crisis. Its just a sign its not getting worse as fast.
Surely until wages catch up with the growth in cost of everything that's previously happened and still happening, or there's a deflation event where things become cheaper then the cost of living crisis is ongoing?

Anybody on here (NZ) do IT consulting in the non-profit space? Around web sites & back end servers etc in a mostly self-hosted / FOSS type situation.
DM me if so - I don't have a lot of detail but my partner's started volunteering somewhere and after they heard I do IT they were interested in a sanity/peer check on some of their plans. But my actual experience is more platforms & networks and im not sure i'm relevant to the web side.
Anywho, flick me a message if that pique's your interest.

It seems likely this is how NZ Police knew of the incident, which they were unable to introduce in Ghahraman's appeal hearing.
So another interesting element of the story is how the details of the incident got leaked. Someone digging through the Auror system, someone with access to the Police investigation or court notes perhaps.
I'm glad some actual journalism has happened, and I think its a shame the earlier gossip posts are still up.

Barrister Graeme Edgeler noted that the alleged incident would likely not meet the standard for "someone who was not actively hiding goods and had yet to move beyond the checkout."
What is (IMO) news, in Fisher's article is that the alleged incident was recorded by Foodstuffs into a nationwide (private?) surveillance system called Auror which includes facial recognition, license plate recognition and an information sharing platform NZ Police have access to.

Firstly, it seems likely that the raft of articles published by the various Politics desks this week were sparked from a social media post by Leo Molloy. This apparently sparked another round of online abuse directed at Ghahraman. To me this reinforces that this wasn't news, but was just gossip.
The alleged incident was not reported to the Police. Based on what Fisher details and a barrister's opinion, it is likely to not even be provable as shoplifting.

On Friday I noticed an article from David Fisher which is about this story, and in my opinion contains the first useful bit of news of all the recent articles.
The bits of interest have very little to do with Ghahraman:
https://archive.is/PCKOe
It's well worth a read as I think it's got a lot of important context missing from the initial rush to post.

Earlier this week I expressed frustration at what I see as harassment and bullying by our main news outlets publishing articles that Ghahraman was newly under investigation for additional shoplifting allegations at a supermarket.
I argued then, and still believe, that what was published was not news worthy and that to me it was basically just gossip.
Which sure people might read but I would argue is not actually in the public's interest.

Watching the Supersmash #cricket and I’d like Ford NZ to know that their incessant “ranger, Ranger, Raaaaaangwr” ad actively makes me hate their entire brand.

Christ, Golriz is no longer a politician, has announced no plans to become one again in the future, or become any other sort of public figure for that matter (that i'm aware of). Could RNZ just leave her alone now?

This won't be a warning to National who have resurrected the controversial dam project in the Hawkes Bay to the benefit of a couple handfuls of their farmer mates. Article discusses a similarly controversial dam in the Nelson area which ended up costing double what it was supposed to and is described as "...the biggest subsidy to a small group of farmers probably in New Zealand's history". https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/538863/controversial-waimea-dam-more-than-double-projected-cost

I've realised that one of my linux audio gripes is actually a firefox audio bug (7 years old) that's still unfixed. I like to have two browsers in use, one that I have signed into google stuff that is only used for those things and one for everything else. So what's folks' linux browser recommendations for avoiding trackers & all the other BS these days?

I know the RNZ story about bots & whatnot is from a political reporter, and also that what is true right now is not necessarily what was true when the site was having problems. Anyway, regarding the suggestion their site has no protection from DDoS. A DNS lookup for www.parliament.nz has it on 185.139.243.230 which is an IP address being advertised from AS48851 by Radware, an Israeli DDoS Protection company. So, yeah, maybe they're terrible at it, or maybe it was just lots of submitters?

I would have hoped RNZ would have any evidence before publishing an article claiming the treaty bill submission website failures were a result of AI bots or some other form of DDoS. This article is on the sort of footing your weird cousins Facebook reckons are built on.

If anyone is curious and has some bright ideas; this is the monitor display issue.
Its pretty intermittent - eg i've not done anything and its now no longer flickering.
But when it does start flickering it seems to do it for quite a while. Both monitors are plugged into the nVidia GPU and I have a 3rd plugged into a motherboard output. All 60hz 1080p.
Gut feel is its worst when there's a full screen app to the front on one of those two monitors.

Ah jeez, logged into github for the first time in ages, and my word its full of crap. Its a windy & rainy day here in the bay so i'm thinking it might be the perfect time to have another crack at deploying forgejo or gitea. Who's got recommendations on which is better and any advice on a simple docker based deployment?

My partner & I decided that we'll buy ourselves some rainwater collection as a (late) Christmas present next year as every year we end up in watering restrictions, usually before Christmas and we'd quite like to keep our veges alive. As an experiment (and bc we'll need it sooner or later) we put some big tubs under the corners of a 3x3m canvas canopy to catch runoff. We filled well over 100L in 12 hours of sometimes heavy rain yesterday. Feels like this will be a wise investment. So much water!

'ACT leader David Seymour says the new deal will cost a "fraction of the price"'
Is 2/1 technically a fraction?
Asking for a friend.
They are hoping people will buy comparing the $900m for two new ferries vs total project cost for iRex including port upgrades.
And they want us to ignore the iRex contract break costs as well which probably make these middling ferries that haven't even been contracted yet more like $1.2b ferries.
Economic vandalism.
