Toot

Earlier this week I expressed frustration at what I see as harassment and bullying by our main news outlets publishing articles that Ghahraman was newly under investigation for additional shoplifting allegations at a supermarket.

I argued then, and still believe, that what was published was not news worthy and that to me it was basically just gossip.

Which sure people might read but I would argue is not actually in the public's interest.

On Friday I noticed an article from David Fisher which is about this story, and in my opinion contains the first useful bit of news of all the recent articles.

The bits of interest have very little to do with Ghahraman:

It's well worth a read as I think it's got a lot of important context missing from the initial rush to post.

Firstly, it seems likely that the raft of articles published by the various Politics desks this week were sparked from a social media post by Leo Molloy. This apparently sparked another round of online abuse directed at Ghahraman. To me this reinforces that this wasn't news, but was just gossip.

The alleged incident was not reported to the Police. Based on what Fisher details and a barrister's opinion, it is likely to not even be provable as shoplifting.

Barrister Graeme Edgeler noted that the alleged incident would likely not meet the standard for "someone who was not actively hiding goods and had yet to move beyond the checkout."

What is (IMO) news, in Fisher's article is that the alleged incident was recorded by Foodstuffs into a nationwide (private?) surveillance system called Auror which includes facial recognition, license plate recognition and an information sharing platform NZ Police have access to.

It seems likely this is how NZ Police knew of the incident, which they were unable to introduce in Ghahraman's appeal hearing.

So another interesting element of the story is how the details of the incident got leaked. Someone digging through the Auror system, someone with access to the Police investigation or court notes perhaps.

I'm glad some actual journalism has happened, and I think its a shame the earlier gossip posts are still up.
