In the winter when water is colder coming out of the tap, I fill the kettle before I go to bed so that it warms up to room temperature over night and takes less time to boil in the morning.

No, because I boil only enough water for the two of us, and that quantity of water sits in indoor pipes, where it's already at room temperature. Keeping it in the pipe until I need it keeps it fresher.

I know how much water fits in our mugs, and the kettle has a scale down the side, so it's easy to boil only what I need.

This is where one of those bloody “smart home” things can help.

I’ve got an automatic switch that flicks the kettle on to boil so that by the time my alarm goes off and I wander down to the kitchen the kettle has just finished boiling.

It needs to be refilled and reset each evening before bed but it’s genius. High five!
