Anyway, happy #LGBTHistoryMonth to all. I can't believe it's been two years since my queer history book was published!

TWENTY-EIGHT is a collection of 28 works from different contributors, edited by me, telling the story of the UK's "don't say gay" law of the 80s and 90s - and the long shadow it still leaves to this day.

There are a couple of stories in there from my teen years. Go on, you know you want to read them.

It’s the first day of Black History Month. It’s also the first day of LGBT History Month.

The more connected the world gets, the more annoying it is that the UK and US have alternated LGBT History Month and Black History Month.

It confuses people, and feels like we have to shout over each other.

Working from a cafe in a train station this afternoon, papers spread all over the table. Actual paper. Feeling very old school. People are looking at me funny. They aren't used to seeing pens and notes scrawled on printouts.

How can I reassure them it's recycled paper? How do I explain my madness?

Had a super interesting conversation yesterday with some people in the community, during which I learned a number of people are planning to steer clear of events like EMF after spotty enforcement of the Code of Conduct.

This actually matches some of my experience in recent years that many tech event CoCs aren't upheld well by the people who set them - and in some cases broken to the organisers themselves.

I really hope feedback like this leads to good discourse and useful, helpful discussion.

I don't want event organisers to feel blamed or get defensive - and I don't want people feeling like they can't go to things.

Especially now, in this climate, we must all try to do better, revisit our biases, and try to make things better even if we think they're okay already.

Thanks to @FiXato and @antijingoist for suggesting this may be to do with hibernation - disabling hibernation and checking my swap settings does seem to have done the trick!

Windows 98 is somehow easier to fix than Windows 11.

I guess it is 87 versions more advanced...

Since I upgraded from 32MB to 96MB of RAM, my laptop hangs when shutting down Windows.

It is otherwise stable and much snappier, so I can’t fathom it. I’d rather not reinstall Windows just for this…

After some light recapping and cleaning the boards after a battery leak… It’s alive! It’s alive!

From April 1998, this was the last in the Satellite Pro line from Toshiba, the same kind of laptop Bill Clinton famously used to send the first email to space from the White House.

This aired on the BBC in 1994 and described the internet as "an anarchic cooperative with no central authority, effectively owned by its 15 million worldwide users."

It's been 31 years - can we make 2025 the year we return the internet to these humble roots?
