Unfortunately nobody can remember the password to the system that has those records. So we have to get IT involved, which means running through more detailed security resets to make sure other systems aren't compromised. It should take a couple weeks.

Not that this is relevant to the current situation. I assure you this is a random memory that popped into my head with zero prompting. "

A lot of people forget how Republicans used the hysteria of 9/11 to gain powers that they later used against domestic political opponents, dissidents, advocates, & journalists

@indubitablyodin This is all cool and dandy but you've never met Nazis willing to burn down the library.
These stories were cool to deal with something that resembled a government.
That world is gone, the US as a democratic state with a stable system of governance is dead.
The US is being managed by Nazis now.
If the library doesn't comply, the Nazis will burn it down, this is the new reality.
Wake up.

It was about the election, but it's still relevant now.
Stop dumping your hopelessness on the people who are working to fix this.
Will what they're doing here be enough? No, but no one thing will solve this and incremental progress is a win. Others will do things on other fronts.
There will be no hero, because no one fixes this alone - it'll be the sum total of a LOT of little things that makes the difference.

@vruz @indubitablyodin that was a response for the situation at the time, not a tutorial for how to survive a totalitarian state, take the same thinking, and apply it to the current situation.
The general idea, is that sabotage can take many forms, some extremely effective, despite a high degree of plausible deniability, and relatively low risk for the people committing it.
I saw a post sometime ago about a guy painting small rocks in pink and dropping them randomly to keep the stasis on edge.

You are REQUIRED to only record and/or keep the personal-identifiable data that is absolutely NECESSARY ONLY - and delete that as soon as the purpose has ceased, as put in law by EU's GDPR.
Any chance that one of your library users might have an EU citizenship? Thus better be safe than sorry, and comply and delete...

Where is now so many #libraries have gotten trapped using #ebook systems based on either Amazon’s Palace or Libby/Overdrive apps (owned by the one of the worst vulture capital companies in the world KKR
Both of whom will gladly sell our personal data to the highest bidder, much less give it over to any government official who comes asking with or without a warrant
I fear the population’s vast e-book usage may be out of local librarians control

@indubitablyodin I recall some libraries posting notices that they hadn’t received any requests that day. So that patrons would know they got a request when that wasn’t posted.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from maccruiskeen@social.linux.pizza
@maccruiskeen Also known as warrant canaries. The idea, of course, being that while someone can be prevented from saying that some event took place, compelled speech is a whole different can of worms.
It only works as long as that is true and patrons know to look for the warrant canary in the first place. So for best effect, it needs to be displayed very prominently.
It also needs to show proof of when it was last updated. Current events headlines is one way.

Well, there are significant data concerns with a lot of the modern library systems, actually. Not only are most libraries equipped to properly assess data security, librarians are not receiving the training they need in data security. It doesn't help that librarians, much like public teachers, are underpaid and over-relied on as a vital part of America's failing social safety net.
For instance, services like Hoopla might track user information and retain/share it in ways not covered by library policy. The same goes for database systems upon which modern libraries rely.
This is why I keep advocating for locally-controlled, independent tech infrastructure for libraries... but c'est la vie, that's a hill I'm likely to die on.
That said: you're generally right. Good data practices on the user-end help a TON. It's just that it's difficult to educate and train people to take even mild precautions.

@indubitablyodin @krparadis @Af_Redelius our library system (Toronto) was hacked for ransom & we lost use of the library system for a few months. We lost other computer access things incl. printing, it seems permanently. These serve the poor & immigrants the most.
Also libraries & librarians are the best. Protect them.

When I went to school in the 1980'es, we learned that it was illegal for libraries to keep such records, because they could deter people from reading, snd without the freedom to read, you can't have freedom of speech. But of course we had ghe nazis up close.
Sometimes it's easy to think that the US has never heard of freedom of speech, and no US soldier has ever been to a country where nazis had power, so there was never anyone to tell US politicians just how nasty those fuckers were.
