🤔"OK fine, abolitionists designed the Statue Of Liberty, and abolitionists paid for the Statue Of Liberty, and abolitionists built the Statue of Liberty...
But what did the US government say about the Statue of Liberty when it was installed and unveiled? If all this was so woke, why weren't there woke speeches? Maybe the meaning had changed by the time it was delivered?"
Speech by the honorable Chauncey M. Depew, at the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty.

that last one in particular (about how injustices would "sort themselves out" seems contrary to the reality of social struggle basically always requiring a fight (as, indeed, it literally just did at that exact time🙃) and is indicative of a very exploitable tendency of moderates and liberals that Ian Danskin calls "values-neutral governance" https://youtu.be/MAbab8aP4_A

also, I know enough British history to know that Cromwell is not someone i'd want to identify with given the regime he implemented and what he did in Ireland

@LeBonk @mekkaokereke You are exactly right. In a way, that speech about how injustices would “sort themselves out” is similar to the way people once talked about the war in Europe. What we call “World War I” they referred to as “the war to end all wars,” which it surely was not. We know better. Yet today, the certainty of “sort themselves out” thinking is akin to “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice,” both of which are far more passive statements than our reality. Our civil society is not nearly as stable, just, nor peaceful enough that we can expect cruelty and #injustice to go away without vigilance and significant struggle — peaceful or otherwise. As you say, it always requires a fight. “Values-neutral governance” is as effective as law without enforcement; it is a failure to comprehend.

@mekkaokereke "threatened with but one danger" would be screamed over on 24 hour news channels as being woke DEI.
