reflection law being debated as a conspiracy theory (rather than basic science) is my new favorite canary in the goldmine example for how any and all science can be brought into question as a “mind virus” 😅

like try looking up pyramids and not getting flooded with ancient aliens conspiracies, or cave paintings without conspiracies about aliens… it’s impossible to avoid. i think it’s such a perfect example that captures how social media, current tech culture…spreads this type of science distrust.

@alienmelon "A SCIENTIFIC LAW IS JUST A STATEMENT REFLECTING THE OBSERVATIONS AND DATA AVAILABLE AT THE TIME IT WAS MADE, NOT A LEGALLY BINDING PRESCRIPTION!!!!!" I screamed before kicking these idiots in the shins.

@alienmelon

There have always been weirdos.

Different to older days: Weirdos can use the Internet to form mobs. This gives them a momentum, because their not singular weirdos any more, but they perceive themselves as as being a large group that can't be that wrong.

And by sharing our… astonishment… and thus their posts, we empower them.

And thus, we lose common ground for any fact-based argument, because everyone seems to have their own facts… eventually allowing Trumpists word-wide to succeed with massive bullshitting.

@alienmelon

This kind of thinking is a slippery slope down to conspiracy thinking, and from there to fringe right wing ideas :/

What I really love is the confidence and conviction they pose on these videos :) If they only had picked up a book on basic linear algebra before talking about dimension behind the mirrors :(

@alienmelon i think I don't understand what they are doubting? Or what they are expecting? Hiding the mirror should do what?

@fanf42 according to the conspiracy theory, the fact that someone can still see your reflection in the mirror even though you are hiding behind something is proof of another dimension. how can the mirror still show you even though it can’t “see” you? it’s another dimension. (there’s a lot of stuff like this tho)

@alienmelon jfc o_O

My wife is a children daycare assistant, and there's a period with little children around 18 months old when they believe that when they hide their eyes, they are hidden. Older, they understand.

It feels a bit like that here. But with some kind of adult nonsense in top of the misunderstanding
