Toot

Written by Erik on 2025-01-28 at 19:30

I just threw away the vast majority of my Noodler's inks. I kept a couple favorites, but it's been ages since I bought any and no longer feel like I can recommend them without excessive caveats. #FountainPens

@edebill what happened this time?

@swflint Nothing new. I just finally got around to freeing up that ink storage space. I'd hardly touched them for years.

@edebill Condolences. I had to do the same - even without the "unrelated" qualms (and have new ones cropped up that I hadn't heard of yet? Do I need to browse /r/fountainpens again?), they were consistently clogging up my favorite pen. I'm feeling slightly guilty about giving them to a local second-hand art supply retailer, but they were very happy to get them, so I guess that's good.

@NicoleJLeBoeuf Nothing new has come out. I just hadn't gotten around to clearing them out.

@edebill I never liked Noodler’s inks in general just for inconsistency reasons (all issues with Nathan aside). I like Apache Sunset and Black Swan in Australian Roses, so I’ve kept samples of those, but I’ve never been very impressed with anything else

@paradoxmo Those are two of the ones I pitched. The bottles I got did not live up to all the swatches folks were posting way back when they first came out.

@edebill they are very situation-dependent. as shading inks I find they are at their best in fude nibs but there’s not really much of a daily use case for them. Apache Sunset is too light in a fine nib for example, and Australian Roses looks quite boring in a fine nib

@edebill It's been that way for years. I havent' thrown mine out, but I don't use them, except for one, and that only because it's a highlighter ink, a thing which is hard to find from any other ink company. I bought a few Noodler's inks over 15 years ago, now, and I haven't boughy any since, won't buy any more, because of the owner's personality and politics.

@gcvsa these were a similar age. 15 or so years ago there was a lot of excitement around them. I bought a bunch. Many of them disappointed me. Then I learned about the guy’s views and now I feel bad when I use even the good inks. Plus he can’t reliably reproduce inks so even if you ignore him being a racist you can’t recommend his inks because there’s no telling what folks will get when they buy them.

@edebill I just remembered that I did actually buy one bottle of Bad Blue Heron in about 2013, when I was living in Seattle. That was the last one. I was hoping for a "bulletproof" blue-black or midnight blue. All my others were bought around 2008-2010.

TBPH, it wasn't the iconongraphy on the labels that tipepd me off, it was hearing him speak in interviews. I have a nose for people with bad politics. They try to hide what they think, but they can rarely avoid their tells.

@gcvsa I had been the same. I use Kiowa Pecan and Black. It’s probably been 15 years since I bought any of them. I pitched 15 bottles or so. I did keep Gruene Cactus - another favorite, with no racist iconography on the label.

@edebill Wow, did there be a problem with your pens to throw away? I don’t know if he commented the reason in another post, I only saw this now

@gilson The quality is highly variable. Some inks are great and others are not, but you can’t rely on them between batches. Quality control is crap. And the guy that makes them is a racist. Best just to steer clear.

@edebill I really realize that between paints really has a variation, but in my case and other colleagues here in Brazil are still affordable options because even being a niche in the US and Europe has a certain local market, already here is much more restricted. Now he being racist had no idea. Do you have more context of this?

Update: I found this reddit discussion with the context: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/142w0bi/the_noodlers_ink_drama_in_one_spot_content/

@gilson that post sums it up pretty well. He has repeatedly come out with labels with antisemitic images. A lot of his American Indian themed inks have labels that are a bit racist as well.

@edebill political disagreements with the company make buying more impossible for me, which stinks. They make one of my favorite blues and a favorite black as well. Won't toss what I've got, but they'll not get more of my $$$.
