Food shopping trip on my ebike at -16Β°C (4Β°F). Eep, my face is cold, and even my fingers.

The wind gets up under my helmet, and my gloves really aren't thick enough for this level of cold. I wore my warmer parka, which is rated for -30Β°F, so I was actually overheating other than my face and fingers.

If there is anything I have learned about the past 25 yrs in the US, it's that there are no media outlets which can be trusted to keep people well-informed without substantively altering the facts or outright ignoring key political and economic issues.

[#]Journalism is dead in America, and it has been for a very long time.

If you want me to immediately distrust you, tell me you are a journalist, because that tells me you have an agenda that has nothing to do with truth and ethics in reporting.

It is with no small amount of consternation that I have watched as many of my friends have started up accounts on services like Bluesky, in the apparent hopes that those platforms will be better alternatives to X, Facebook, etc.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is controlled by the very same billionaire class that controls X, Facebook, and all other for-profit platforms, so you are only setting yourselves up by joining Bluesky. I cannot warn you more strongly against joining Bluesky.

I knocked one of my Corelle pasta bowls off the counter the other night and it shattered. Corelle is tough to break, but it definitely will, if it gets hit hard enough.

One thing I don't think enough people think about is that our measures of time are almost completely arbitrary, outside of those that are set by the physical nature of the universe.

The "second" is an arbitrary unit. There's no particular reason why we should divide a day into 24 hours of 60 minutes of 60 seconds, except that it makes division into integers easy.

You are already living on the most valuable land in the country, you are also paying for the storage of a vehicle on that land. $9 a day is the cost of a cup of coffee in Manhattan.

Heavy sighs today over my (VERY affluent) Manhattan friends complaining about the congestion tolls.

People need to understand that the vast majority of the traffic in Manhattan is not from people who actually live in Manhattan. People in Manhattan have by far and away the lowest car ownership rates in the US, for very good reason.

If you are living in the zone and you own a car, there's very little likelihood that the cost of the congestion fee is going to be a significant impact on your life.

My curry is a bit too soupy, as I feared it might be, so I'm reducing the sauce a bit before eating it.

I seem to be having trouble withmy coordination today. I dropped the rice cooker pot full of rice into the sink while trying to fill the pot to let the rice soak. I also dumped out some of the rice while trying to drain the soaking/rinsing water.

I pretty much never F this up. But today? Pshhhhh.

Yeah, I scooped up as much as I could from the bottom of the dirty sink and rinsed it a few extra times. Hopefully it won't taste weird/soapy.

The curry smells amazing, tho. Dinner in 30.

OK, I am decamping to the kitchen so I can get started on cooking dinner, so I can eat before midnight, even though it's so dark out it already feels like midnight.

If I keep sitting here in front of the bedroom computer, I'll be stuck here until after midnight.

I need to finish cleaning off the 2012 MacBook Pro so I can put Linux Mint on it and have a full web browser on my kitchen table.

The population and territory of the United States is too big and too diverse to be ruled by a unitary government. Federalism can work, but we abandoned the original vision of the Founders and Framers in the 1910s, and we are suffering for it.

The system has been gamed by the minority to prevent progress, and it is probably unrecoverable at this point, because the legal means of doing so are bound by minority rule and subverted by the aristocracy.

Would really love it if more Americans wrapped their brains around the fact that the federal government was never meant to be this powerful, and that this is has only been the case since WWI, because we now pay the vast majority of our taxes to the federal government rather than our state governments, which rely on federal disbursements.

I am not saying that we shouldn't have a robust social safety net. I am for universal income, healthcare, education, and housing, with no eligibility testing.

I am not interested in running my own #email server, #weblog server, etc, etc, etc.

That's a full time job in and of itself, and I know this, because I founded what was (as far as I know in the mid-1990s) the first 100% broadband end-user ISP in America.

I don't want to be in that business, anymore. I don't want to run my own #fediverse server, my own #newsgroup server, my own #webforum server, especially because so many of these basic services rely entirely on network effects for usefulness.

I have been saying for decades that we need a "data priesthood", for lack of a better term.

We need an institutionalized belief in the most stringent professional moral code to guard our data #privacy and #security that verges on religious belief, because such a belief is the only thing that stops people from pillaging your data, and the profit motive undermines this.

We need a concept similar to the Fair Witness in Heinlein's novels.

This entire thread is a reminder that everything good in this world relies upon your ability to trust that the people you interact with aren't secretly plotting to fuck you every which way they can.

This is literally the basis of all advanced civilizations, specialization and division of labor.

If you can't trust your ISP, computer hardware, OS, software, and hosting providerβ€”if you can't trust the companies with whom you are doing business not to be evil, everything falls apart.

One of the things that bugs me about #FFXIV is that you can't choose class and starting society separately.

It also bugs me that you can't choose weapons separately from classes, because of the way the system is designed around the primary hand weapon or tool defining which class is active.

For a solo player, out of the classes I've tried, I like Gladiator/Paladin best to start, but I like Red Mage later (starting from Level 50) for DPS. Sadly, there's no overlap between them in gear. #gaming

I am far less concerned, as a practical matter, over whether or not my ISP is #spying on my data or whether or not I need to use a #VPN, than whether or not #computer OS and hardware manufacturers and browser software are providing unique device identifiers to websites and applications that can be used to track me even if I completely wipe the device, change location and IP address, delete my accounts, and start over. #security #privacy #tracking #fingerprinting

People of vulnerable minorities, in today's political climate, I would strongly suggest NOT creating server instances or accounts on instances that are easily identifiable as communities of people of vulnerable minorities.

When the brownshirts come knocking, guess whose doors they are going to bust down first?

Find an instance that is friendly and protective by principle, and hide in the crowd. Disguise yourself from casual detection. Go stealth, if you have to for your personal safety.

The KK is obviously heavier, though.

Salt, msg, sugar, and citric acid are the cornerstones of my portable/handbag seasoning kit. There's almost nothing I can't make better with those on the fly.

I might also swap out the generic microfiber cloth for a slightly larger PackTowl that will actually take up less volume in the bottle.
