Logging train revival to help 'deteriorating' Napier-Taihape Rd
This is good news, kind of. Because the pulp mills closed there are spare logs and rather than truck them to Napier for shipping they are going to use rail.
But sending logs overseas, as opposed to processing them here, is bad for us economically. We need more value add for local jobs etc. And don't forget why those mills closed.

@rogerparkinson Geez, I'm surprised long distance freight trucks (of any kind) would be allowed on that road unless its to drop goods off to the farms along the way.
Its not as scary a road as you might think, but its not built for any serious volume of heavy traffic and i'd hate to meet a logging truck & trailer unit coming the other way!

@JimmyKip @rogerparkinson When we travelled around East Cape in a campervan we did meet multiple trucks and trailers head-on, and it's exactly as frightening as you would expect.

@leighelse @rogerparkinson Up around there its a bit more understandable as that's kinda the only through route available unless there was some way of popping the logs out onto some kind of barge in the various coves, bays and beaches.
But towing a camper and meeting one of those trucks would definitely be an experience. Reminds me of a video I watched of a truck driver doing the Remutaka hill and him pointing out the sections they had to radio ahead to find out which truck got to go first.

@JimmyKip @leighelse @rogerparkinson driving remutaka hill road behind a long freight truck is an educational opportunity for sure

@rogerparkinson If we want to grow the economy (itself a questionable assumption) we should be looking to add value to all our primary exports. Timber is an obvious one.
