Picked up a splitting axe head at a trash'n'treasure market last week, and today I finally got it hafted.
The blade is blunt and has a chip in it, but a few test swings did a great job of splitting some stubborn logs I had in the wood pile. The head is heavy, and I've put a good sized handle on it.
I can already tell that when I've finished restoration it's going to be very satisfying to use.

Walked out today to find that a bite had been chewed out from my axe handle.
Because I coated it with linseed oil.
Dang possums, yo. I was wondering why it was making so much noise last night.
It's because it was snacking on MY TOOLS!
😭

@m @randomgeek : I'm just glad the possum didn't completely wreck the tool, otherwise I know ex-axe-ly the sort of puns we'd see.

@pjf I had to. I don't usually do puns because as you can see mine are blunt and unrefined.
But I read your tail and just had to take a bite. To do otherwise would have been
um
uh
IMPOSSUMBLE

@inlaing : OMG if I lived in NZ I would be having a delicious possum stew for lunch, and a new pelt curing in the yard.

@airshipper @pjf plucking possums for fur is a thing, but possum stew really hasn't caught on

@inlaing @airshipper : I've never eaten possum before, and it's a protected species here in Australia, but I've witnessed animals not beholden to state law eat possum, and honestly it looked delicious. Given the opportunity I'd try it in a heartbeat.

@inlaing @pjf using the aforementioned axe, no less.

@puck @inlaing : A fair comment, and the axe as-is could easily kill a possum, but I wouldn't want to use it for that purpose.
It's still being restored, so the blade is blunt, and it's a splitting axe, so the head is heavy and the handle is long. That's going to make it very hard to aim for a humane kill.
I would probably go with a Mojave scissor trap, using the axe as bait.

@pjf @inlaing All fair enough. But, I wonder if that'd be the first time an axe is used as bait for a possum trap.
