I honestly don't like having to have these conversations, but Mr 10 rightly keeps asking questions about why inequality exists and what's the background behind that.
At some point I'm going to need to get more familiar with the World Inequality Database to answer specific questions.

Got to explain to Mr 10 that one of reasons why higher education used to be (almost) free, and now isn't, is because charging for education overwhelmingly favours the rich.
Free education runs the "danger of producing an educated proletariat", which is trouble if you're trying to run a country that doesn't favour the masses.

Update: New laptop battery is charging.
My problem fixed itself and I have no idea why.
I did not do the power reset ritual.

Laptop recognises new battery, but refuses to charge it. Apparently a ritual that involves disconnecting the battery, disconnecting the charger, and holding the power button might fix that. idk.
I miss the old rituals where you'd have a henge and a bonfire.

"Hmm, the skin on this replacement laptop battery just feels like it's been stuck on with light adhesive. I wonder if there's a different brand battery underneath?"
[ Begins to peel off covering… ]
"Ooop, no. That's just six lithium cells in a trenchcoat."

This toot inspired by me looking for the best way to remove a particular glued laptop battery, and having to wade through a sea of AI slop before coming to a vaguely useful answer.

Was watching a news report¹ on Comdex '96, and I've realised just how much my expectations around tech have lowered.
I know everyone supposedly remembers the technology of their 20s as the best technology, but it really feels like 90s tech was filled with so much promise, and the 90s web was so vibrant, and the 90s played synthwave unironically at tech events, and all of that is rad AF.

I don't think I can properly express how exciting this is. The Rare Trades Centre is an incredible space, and I don't know about you, but getting a scholarship to, say, forge your own blacksmithing tools¹ or cast your own silver jewellery using cuttlefish bones² would be rad AF.
To be able to do this for free with a scholarship would be amazing.
Tell your friends. Tell your kids. There's a lot of courses to choose from.

Oh gosh, I've been hand-twisting the yucca fibres while on my train trip, and they are lovely to work with. Soft, clean, and pliable.
Clean in particular is a lovely experience. I work with a lot of raw fibres that still have some vegetative matter attached, a lot of which comes away with the twisting process. These yucca result in much less dust, and a much more pliable cord. ❤️

Walked out today to find that a bite had been chewed out from my axe handle.
Because I coated it with linseed oil.
Dang possums, yo. I was wondering why it was making so much noise last night.
It's because it was snacking on MY TOOLS!

I've been thinking a lot about this video from Andrewism recently, about how one doesn't really need money for most forms of exchange, except when you're trading with strangers whom you never expect to see again.
Of course, that greatly benefits the ruling class. Rather than relying upon communities and social ties to facilitate trade, they can remove themselves from needing to build trust with those they rule, while still enjoying the benefits of their production.

Picked up a splitting axe head at a trash'n'treasure market last week, and today I finally got it hafted.
The blade is blunt and has a chip in it, but a few test swings did a great job of splitting some stubborn logs I had in the wood pile. The head is heavy, and I've put a good sized handle on it.
I can already tell that when I've finished restoration it's going to be very satisfying to use.

Hey folks, this might be a weird recommendation, but This War Of Mine is currently 90% off.
It is, hands down, the most harrowing and emotion filled game I've ever played. It follows the stories of civilians trying to survive in a warzone. It does not pull punches. I had to put it down for years after I first played it.
Why am I mentioning this? Maybe you feel bad, and you'd like a safe external excuse to feel bad. I read sad books and play sad games for this reason.

Mr 9 is keeps raising questions of wealth inequality, is interested in sections of the Piketty book I'm reading, and listened to a 20 minute long Marxist analysis of Skibidy Toilet.
Mr 7 is eager to share every one of his EDM discoveries with me, and has acknowledged that sandwich engineering is a true and noble calling.
These kids are alright.
