Drinks industry worried about weight-loss drugs… are they really, though?

I am kind of interested in the economics of the whole weight-loss drug thing. Obviously they’re alluring, but there must be a pretty low ceiling on the proportion of the population likely to be taking them at any time, even at saturation point.

Is that really enough, at this stage of their roll-out, to take such a chunk out of the drinks industry… or could there be something even more unpalatable going on…

Like maybe the last few decades of normalised, deep-and-wide boozing was an aberration, and the gravy train is being decommissioned, Ozempic or not?

Anyway, I can’t help thinking that the more hype there is about any wonderdrug, the more bizarre, ghastly, or just untenable the side-effects turn out to be…

My money’s on people sprouting tentacles with these ones.

@noodle I can see that. We hear all the time, though, about that happening as a generational shift, or some kind of cultural resettling, so I would love to see the relative contributions of, eg. Gen-Z non-drinkers; Ozempic non-drinkers; newly-diagnosed-and-treated ADHDers; local increases in religious non-drinkers due to demographic change etc.

@drandrewv2 @noodle Maybe this is their real concern but they can't bring themselves to say it out loud

@ehproque @noodle yeah, I did wonder if they’re really just squirming around the inconvenience of public health

@drandrewv2 - How many tentacles? And would they be prehensile and fully usable? Asking...um...for a friend. Yes.
