Pro tip: if you have two or more pets (who actually get on with each other) and you have to put one of them down, it actually helps the survivors if you bring the body home for a few minutes.
They'll sniff, it'll take a brief moment, and now they won't pine or go looking for the missing one.

Got a new SD card, copied 44GB of music over, and have settled in with my shiny new Tangara.
The sound quality is everything that other people have said it is: all the details, no harshness.
I had to switch to my noise-cancelling headphones this morning, and this is the first time I've really felt the difference.
And it has a headphone jack!

My gay iPod arrived!
I was not prepared for just how tiny this thing is.
Now to go get an SD card, because apparently I don't have any full-sized ones here.

Voice-training session #3 was today.
I'm making rapid progress but/and, with all the pitch-based exercises, I keep forgetting that we're principally trying to sort out my speaking voice.
It looks like I'll wind up able to actually sing, and it's hard to express how excited I feel about this.

Please CW any directly political content, especially about the USA shitshow.
I know it's important. But so is our collective mental health.
I've put many people on a timed mute, because I'm just getting overwhelmed by the flood. I'll be unfollowing people who just can't control themselves.
I've also been getting more vigilant about my own posts and boosts, because I'm as fallible as anybody else.
(I say "directly" because yes, everything is political, especially gender and technology. Not interested in splitting this hair any further.)

Something I'd really love for smokers to understand: the point of smoking outside is not about where you are, but where the smoke goes.
The guys ripping out our old kitchen are great workers, so I don't want to yell at them. However, it kinda defeats the purpose of walking all the way downstairs to smoke outside, when they leave both our apartment door and the outside door open.
The smoke gets sucked straight inside, goes all through the stairwell, and all through our apartment. Blech.

Alex is thoroughly enjoying his new evening routine.
Thanks to his kidneys going critical recently, he now has to be fed separately, to make sure he gets the medication we mix into his food. We accomplish that by locking him in my office with me.
That means he gets Mama to himself for... well, as long as he wants it. Not sure whether he's happier about getting time with me, or a break from his siblings.
He's putting weight back on now, which is a huge relief.

Being a Sphynx, Simone's behaviour is erratic at the mellowest of times.
Today, she's been sprinting around the apartment like a four-footed headless chicken, with no discernable pattern or purpose, and randomly whining for attention at the top of her lungs from any room we're not in.
I'm worried that she's somehow made it onto Facebook and gotten infected with this "masculine energy" stuff.

Studio musician friends! I could use the benefit of your experience.
New home, new space, new desk. But what kind of desk, given that I need it for more than "just" music production?
I'm thinking either a purpose-designed studio table that I modify a little, or a basic trestle table that I modify a lot.
Whichever way you've gone with setting up your studio, what worked well, and what would you do differently next time?
I'm leaning towards the basic table at the moment, so I'm mostly interested in why that would be an especially good/bad idea.

Question for the visually-impaired and/or those who use screen-readers: how much value would it add for you, if I started recording audio version of blogposts and other content on my personal site or the project site for Syscat?
Granted, there's very little content there at the moment, so the question is speculative, if not generic. Still: would you follow a link to hear me read it, or would you carry on with a screen-reader?
Feel free to comment, boost and/or vote, especially if you have input about how that might be usefully done for technical content, like API documentation.
Before anybody asks: no, video is not an available option. I'm climbing enough learning curves already.

And on that note: if you perform 4'33" to an empty and thus silent hall, did you actually perform it?

About John Cage's infamous concept piece 4'33" and his equally infamously litigious estate:
They claim copyright over any "recording" of silence of that length, including any purported sample thereof.
However, my understanding is that the silence of the performers is only a backdrop for the substance of the piece.
It's about the sounds the audience makes.
Without the sounds of the audience, it's not a performance of 4'33".
Has this seriously not been brought up in court, to invalidate these claims?

Holy shit, Kat actually recorded something!
No, you're not going to hear it. The timing's all over the shop, for one thing. It's boring to anybody other than me, for another.
The point was to play with new approaches, though, and I certainly did that. Like pointing a a mic at the drum pads, so I could blend the sound of my hands striking them with the line output from the drum synth itself.
Then Alex jumped into my lap, so I recorded a track of playing along on his ribcage. The boys have gotten accustomed to me using them as bongos, so that track includes the occasional sound of him snufflepurring into the mic.
That made it difficult to avoid laughing while recording the bass... which I also mic'd up because it's a monocoque thing and thus nicely resonant.
Now we pour a glass of wine and start mixing...

I would like for everybody responsible* for the UI pattern of disruptive pop-ups interrupting every page or message transition, to be unable to focus on anything ever again.
That should get them out of the way of the rest of us.
I'm a little tired of websites interrupting with a blocking upsell advert while I'm trying to use the services I'm already paying for. Or that I'm trying to pay for, and am now having second thoughts about.
At this rate, I'm going to start specifically checking for this issue as part of the vendor-selection process.

Unexpected moment of joy:
Earlier today, I shook a business card out of a book in which it had been serving as a bookmark.
Apparently for a very long time, because I've used book-darts for years now.
Just looked at the card now: it's for the jeweller who made our wedding rings.
One of us asked when he was planning to retire.
"Oh, I retired about ten years ago. I just do this to get out of the house."
"I'd love to see pictures of your wedding! But please don't show me pictures of the rings at your wedding. People do that for some reason, and I already know what they look like. I made them."
Every inch a craftsman, and dedicated to making what will make his clients happy.
