Anyway, I can’t help thinking that the more hype there is about any wonderdrug, the more bizarre, ghastly, or just untenable the side-effects turn out to be…
My money’s on people sprouting tentacles with these ones.

Is that really enough, at this stage of their roll-out, to take such a chunk out of the drinks industry… or could there be something even more unpalatable going on…
Like maybe the last few decades of normalised, deep-and-wide boozing was an aberration, and the gravy train is being decommissioned, Ozempic or not?

Drinks industry worried about weight-loss drugs… are they really, though?
I am kind of interested in the economics of the whole weight-loss drug thing. Obviously they’re alluring, but there must be a pretty low ceiling on the proportion of the population likely to be taking them at any time, even at saturation point.

Didn’t help that the beginning of my work day, yesterday, had been interrupted with a pop-up in Outlook asking would I recommend Outlook to a friend/colleague? It enraged me so far I actually bothered to type a response, along the lines of “Fuck you. Thrice over.”

Been invited to speak at a conference for which one of the themes is on Microsoft 365 and Sharepoint in records management, and its a nice, supportive, non-commercial conference, so I’ve agreed a useful talk on another theme but, good grief, I was tempted to plant a diatribe on how Microsoft are perverting enterprise architecture, and undermining the long-term sustainability/viability of information management, to satisfy the rapacious greed of the capitalist machine.

Best thing in the guardian right now:
https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/jan/18/best-chocolate-biscuits
I still daydream about the giant bags of broken biscuits my mum used to get at the supermarket when I was a teenager. Every kid in the street knew what time and day of the week she got back from Crazy Prices (a NI institution), and they’d all arrive at ours in time to help her carry the shopping in, and then we’d sit round drinking tea and eating all the broken biscuits.

Deepest of sighs.
You all know I think trade unionism is good and important. That doesn’t mean I think all unions are good. A union dominated by stupid people, and/or stupidly-managed is stupid-at-scale.

Trust Nick. I’m sure he’s never sold out the public good, or his stated values for his own elevation…

Among the many things that I HATE about modern life: news stories about youngish women all seem to be illustrated with AI ‘enhanced’ photos: ie: creepy as fuck, with their eyes clumsily stretched out to take up about a quarter of their faces, and weird artefacts at the margins of their hair. I get that these are probably pictures the women themselves have edited, and choose to make available for reuse… News outlets don’t actually have to publish them.

This morning I’m reading about autism and pencil-grasp, which got a special mention on my assessment report. Fascinating. Apparently one of the hiding-in-plain-sight clues that I was #autistic all along.
I’d kind of assumed this weirdness* was something I’d picked up from my brother and my childhood bestie, both of whom use the same grip, and both happen to be left-handed… but both also v possibly autistic themselves

Doctors over the years:
“Gallstones? Have you tried losing weight?”
“Painful periods? Have you tried losing weight?”
“Work-related stress? No: your mental is suffering because you’re fat.”
“Crushing fatigue? Maybe a low-calorie diet will help…” 🧐
Or how about you actually listen to what I’m saying to you, and not grasp mindlessly for ways to blame your patients for things that it’s your LITERAL JOB to diagnose and treat.
