I ordered groceries for delivery via DoorDash for the first time, because it's snowing outside and I have had enough and I need onions to make lentil soup. So there.

@ninapaley I'm just curious what the cost of delivery is?

@stephagain There was a $5 "service fee" plus a suggested 10% tip. I had a special introductory coupon today which I think waived the usual delivery fee. I'm not sure if they up the prices a little bit as well. Overall the cost of delivery was more than worth it today.

However the shopper was indeed pretty bad, couldn't find some things and mis-identified others. Couldn't find the exact brand/size of cream I ordered, texted me, I said "just get a smaller container of cream" and s/he instead substituted Silk-brand "cream alternative", a coconut oil, faba bean, and guar gum concoction.

Fortunately I didn't need cream today and can go days without, but this was pretty bad.

I won't use this service again except on days like this when I already haven't been able to shop in a long time due to weather, and really need an ingredient or two just to get through the day. In this case, I most needed onions, as I have been wanting to make lentil soup for days. I also got some herbs and stuff, and made a huge pot.

@ninapaley living in the countryside nothing like that exist here, so you pay 5 $ delivery plus 10% of your grocery price? and the person is not someone from the shop?

I heard before people had cars it was common to have your groceries delivered, but you would go to the shop, choose your stuff and then some guy from the shop would bring to your house

what do you put in your lentil soup? I usually do always the same recipe with lentils, maybe I need a change.

@stephagain Lentil soup:

Sautee diced onions in olive oil (sorry I don't measure or weigh. A few medium onions I guess) and some garlic (about 1 tsp jarred minced garlic, or a couple fresh cloves) until tender/soft. Add diced celery (about the same volume as the onions, 3 large stalks or 5 medium), a large diced carrot (optional) and a medium diced potato. Add about 1 pound dried lentils (4 cups?) and enough water, bring to boil. Add a few tablespoons of homemade veggie bouillon mix (equal parts nutritional yeast flakes, table salt, and Trader Joes 21 Seasonings Salute or similar herb/seasoning mix like Mrs Dash), a few bay leaves, and 2-4 pucks turmeric juice (I juice my own and freeze in little pucks, each about the size of an ice cube, great for cooking!). Simmer everything until lentils are fully cooked and desired soup-like consistency is achieved. Add water if needed. Season to taste; might need more bouillon mix or just salt. Can also add soy sauce/tamari to season. Finally, add 1 bunch fresh parsley and 1 bunch fresh dill, washed and chopped. Stir fully and remove from heat.

@FeartnTired @ninapaley I've learnt about mirepoix here!!! had to google it.

I like celery very much, just I don't grow any neither are other farmers that cell at my shop. I could try with celery root instead.

@stephagain @FeartnTired Celery root works too. When I lived in Veyrier (on the French border just outside of Geneva Switzerland) the markets only had celery root, not "celery branch," and while different it still added the appropriate savory vegetal flavor to soups. I would use celery root more but here in the US it's an oddity, just as the stalks are an oddity in France. Cultural differences.
