A reminder that Greenland is part of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) of the EU and Greenlandic citizens are EU citizens.

Any move by Trump and the US to invade and annex Greenland would be a declaration of war with the EU and a gross violation of its 1951 treaty to protect Greenland from attack. (Though not ironic as the mafia never protects you from itself.) Furthermore, an attack on a NATO member would be deemed an attack on all other NATO members (Art 5) and a violation of the treaty (Art 8).

If neither EU nor NATO members did anything to protect Greenland/Denmark against the US’s overwhelming military might (as is likely) – and, remember, US troops are already in Greenland and in other EU countries also – it would signal that no EU or NATO state is safe should a stronger military decide to invade.

If anything, if the EU hasn’t understood it yet, it must start treating the US not as an ally but as a threat. Trump isn’t a clown. He’s the fascist leader of the country with – in the words of Kamala Harris – the world’s most lethal military.

We must shore up our defenses because it is becoming impossible to ignore that the EU is caught between two hostile forces: a fascist US on the one side and a fascist Russia on the other, neither of which have two shits to give about international law (that was a quaint concept while it lasted, wasn’t it?)

Either we learn to defend ourselves in the EU or we become a vassal state of Gilead. And, as much as I oppose militaries – in a world in which they very much exist – I’d much rather it wasn’t the latter.

@aral I’m an U.S citizen living in NY….at this point I think it’s time for the E.U, and China to hit us with heavy sanctions and trade embargos.

You all may not understand how quickly this country/Trump’s admin is going to collapse the second the price of goods rise, or we walk into an empty grocery store

@wonkothesane @aral The latter could(/will?) even happen before anything else - when the ICE follows the plans re undocumented people.

Farmers won't be able to deliver.

And in addition bc all planned cuts the meat production will face the same.

So either way the US is fucked (by oligarchs that is) and with the US citizens the allies.

So the sooner you'll "sort this out" the better for everybody.

Good luck 🤞

With that group of oligarchs the orange guy is backed by the most powerful companies of the planet. They can switch of satellites (communication), restrict internetfunctions (cloudservices...) restrict trades (Amazon...) and functions in OS (MS, Apple...)... Not to forget, global institutions like ICANN, UN... are based in US.

With such uninhibited egos EVERYTHING is possible, proven every day.

Btw. #panamacanal means tradecontrol.

The Panama Canal is important waterway, but when it dried up last year, the shipping business routed around the tip of South South America. It’s an annoyance and it adds to expense, but it doesn’t stop trade. But you’ve raised an interesting point what set him on Panama. This is not an idea that come out of his own head. Somebody is saying things to him.

The latter would probably happily be taken over by e.g. AliExpress. International comms might be an issue but Europe has own satellites.

You are correct. We can either be the little poodles of somebody else, or throw Meloni and Orban out, lock the obvious collaborators (Le Pen, AFD) behind bars, and go our own way.

I suspect there is a majority of people in the EU who want nothing to do with either Trump or Putin. But I may be mistaken.

Our german parliament only needs to submit an application to our Federal Constitutional Court to examine a ban on the AFD party. This could've been done afaik even by only the chancelor. Yet, to many of the members of the Bundestag are hesitating. ("It could go wrong"🙄 ) despite all evidence.

And it's NOT up to them to decide about a ban, ONLY to submit the application.

@wonkothesane @aral Unfortunately, in the US a government can't actually "collapse". No matter how bad a job the President does, he gets four years, unless he gets impeached. More, given the Supreme Court and Congress, he won't impeached.

Parliamentary democracies really do win on that issue, where a Prime Minister can lose his job in minutes if he really fucks up.

Thankfully, the GOP and Trump are doing everything they can to ensure that the store shelves go empty and the price of everything goes through the roof, quite likely with an economic collapse in short order.

But I would not suggest that it would be a home by Christmas effort. The money behind the GOP, plutocracy itself, is transnational in scope.

Crippling billionaires, devastate their wealth. More than military effort, dismantling wealth is of utmost importance.

I certainly don't disagree with that strategy!

But I've also heard the point made that, in the event of an economic collapse, the billionaires + oligarchs will actually be ok . . . their assets are diverse.

My rough sense of the reasoning behind these self-destructive moves is that, in the event of economic collapse, it gives corporations an opportunity to buy up property and companies in the wreckage . . .

Yes, exactly. There's a distinction these days in that the wealth of billionaires is predicated on the stock market.

An implosion, especially of Tesla stock, for example, would crater most of their wealth.

Normally, the wealthy absolutely love the economic crisis just for the reasons that you've enumerated, but this hyper-financialized world is a global ponzi scheme, much of their wealth will disappear with it.

@wonkothesane @aral Maybe. But the usual trick for fascists when their actions make things work is to say this proves they need more power. Trump's trying to do the things needed to bring down egg prices you see, but he's being blocked at every turn by the bureaucrats, or the judiciary, or the blue states. Just remove one more check and balance, bring one more thing under direct control of the president, and then the good times will come.
