Things you can do to help immigrants in the US right now:

I am much more worried about the very real rounding up of immigrants happening right now than anything else. This is something that we have power at the ground level to help with, and our resistance is critical.
This not the first time the US has done this. In the 1950's 1.3 million people were deported to Mexico, not all of them immigrants. The difference between then and now is our access to technology, and our ability to communicate. We can make a difference https://www.history.com/news/operation-wetback-eisenhower-1954-deportation

ICE was turned away from a Chicago elementary school. They were not allowed on site and they did not detain anyone. This is why resistance is important, and how we can actively fight.
Edit: The school district has said that ICE did not come to the school, but Secret Service. This was a miscommunication by the district. The article has been updated.

@itzyg Who sends immigration to raid a primary school?! I'm in Australia. This just seems incomprehensible.

It wasn't ICE but Secret Service trying to find a kid who posted an anti-FOTUS video.
The school's reaction to the DHS IDs was the right one, no matter which branch was nosing around. What I found interesting is that supposedly they visited the home first...you think they'd just have stayed there.

@itzyg @deafferret I cannot for the life of me tell what this article actually is about. There was no ICE, there was no deportation. This is just an article about confused people confusing other people.

@frew Basically yesterday afternoon CPS reported that ICE came to an elementary school and we're turned away. They believed this because federal agents with Homeland Security came to the school. These agents were not ICE, but instead Secret Service. The district came out and corrected themselves, and I have edited the original post to reflect this.

@frew @itzyg Fair, thanks for actually reading it. I'm on high alert, but as far as I know, it's all fear so far here locally (Omaha)

@itzyg When you say "look up who to report ICE raids to in your state, who is that likely to be? My understanding was that law enforcement were unlikely to get involved, even if they viewed a raid as unlawful.

@jscholes Great question. Basically groups of lawyers who make it very hard for ICE to do their jobs, and help people know what to do and what their rights are if they're being detained. Law enforcement might not do anything but federal agencies aren't willing to take that chance.
These networks can also mobilize people to spread the information quietly through an area so that people can get out before ICE shows up without tipping them off.
You can call the national Migra Watch hotline if there's not a specific one in your area 1-844-363-1423
