I suppose that's always the question with increasing mass tourism - is the spending being spread around to benefit everyone, or being concentrated while locals are annoyed by the numbers of visitors?

I laughed at the mention in that article of the following inconvenience:
"... the gigantic suitcases blocking my way on the shinkansen..."
What is it about tourists wanting to take cases the size of fridges on their travels??? I'm always tripping over them on high-speed trains in Europe, where there really isn't enough room for them. What on earth do people need that much space for?

@timrichards I saw a bloke at Gatwick wheeling around a suitcase almost as tall a as him (admittedly he was on the short side, but still). Boggled me, having spent 28 days schlepping around the UK with 6-10kg of carry-on baggage

@ThermiteBeGiants I can't see the appeal of those huge cases, what a hassle to lug around.

@timrichards Good question. I have no idea either. Do they want to carry about all they have?

@timrichards "the gigantic suitcases blocking my way on the shinkansen"
Japan has excellent suitcase services. You leave it at the hotel, and it appears at your next hotel. No need to lug it anywhere. If you're going between particularly fancy hotels then the service is room-to-room rather than hotel-to-hotel.

@timrichards been saying this for awhile….
The major beneficiaries from the tourism boom is limited to large businesses and treasury,
… while many of the workers that support tourist movement are unpaid volunteers. Paid employees only very recently started seeing talks of a wage increase (albeit minimal bordering a joke)
To top it off, cost of living and cost of SMB activities increasing.
I’d be pretty narky as well.
