The only useful application for an internet-connected kitchen appliance is so that it can ping an NTP server so that it’s always displaying the correct time

"Parker says Parramatta and Western Sydney Airport are on the cards for stations in future stages on the way to Canberra. “This is very much the first stage of a national high-speed rail network. If you were just tasked with building a link between Sydney and Newcastle to serve commuters principally, you’d perhaps have a different configuration,” he adds."

No mate, putting a massive dog-leg into the follow-on route to Canberra & Melbourne is going to cut the network idea off at the knees, with the end result being a glorified Sydney-Newcastle commuter line. It makes zero sense, check the map

I am regretfully agreeing with the former Perrotet Liberal regime's concept: run high speed rail from Newcastle to Olympic Park instead of this ridiculous dog-leg to Central. All things considered I expect this attempt to build a High Speed Railway to fail; there is going to be precisely zero buy-in from any states other than NSW (and even then it's lukewarm), thus reducing any desire to keep it running after the current Federal government is booted out

20 years ago on December 18th, 2004, the first Victorian Goldfields Railway train arrived at Castlemaine Station from Maldon. It was the culmination of 28 years of efforts by the volunteers of the Castlemaine & Maldon Railway Preservation Society to rebuild and reopen the whole 16km line. To this day it remains one of the premier heritage railways in Australia and one of a handful to have a direct connection to the Australian railway network - and still proudly operated by volunteers.

The New South Wales Government's Draft Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan has a section on Net Zero and how low and zero emissions transport factors into it.

Across the three pages of the Net Zero section, there is zero mention of expanding railway electrification, despite this being an established and economical method of reducing transport emissions. There is a brief mention of "investigating the use of net zero electricity to power the rail network".

Instead, the report talks about battery-electric car charging stations, hydrogen and how they recently "reduced the construction emissions" of a motorway expansion project by using different light bulbs.

What a joke. If you live in New South Wales and live/work/visit the Hunter region, I strongly suggest that you tell them to pull their heads in:

The Victorian Goldfields Railway in Castlemaine, Australia has been collaborating with https://frontiersi.com.au on a "PNT Mini Labs" project, looking at the performance (accuracy and precision) of GNSS recievers when they are moving along fixed routes like railways. Result: steam locos with satellite antennas!

Car insurance is due soon. Bit of a bump in the premium, as expected. Tempted to have a look elsewhere but also that would involve giving PII to even more Australian companies for "comparisons" and that could be just as painful. Ugh.
