What do people with full sized feet do for biking shoes in winter #BikeTooter ? platform pedals / casual shoes not race cleats, but something waterproof and windproof enough to keep warm at 20mph, like hiking boots but then I would need gaiters to keep the gravel out of the tops?

(apparently my standard twelve-inch foot requires the very rare "size 13 extra extra wide, no wider, no actually wider")

@enobacon I sympathize with the wide foot challenges. I’ve found Keens to be both very weather resistant and wide foot friendly. I have a pair of hiking boots and a pair of snow boots from them. The hiking boots are usually what I end up wearing for cold weather biking, along with thick wool socks. That said in full snowy weather, snow boots with snow pants covering over the tops.

@scottsthoughts our streets are dissolving into gravel and then the cars dept comes around spreading more if it snows a little. Would the mid height hiking boots get gravel down the top if my pantlegs aren't covering the tops?

@enobacon Honestly not sure about gravel proofing of the hiking boots specifically. I have not had gravel intrusion issues while hiking in them, but I think our roads are smoother and less aggressively gritted based on your description. In rain, I've used those reflective velcro ankle straps to cinch up the bottoms of rain pants over the tops of the boots to good effect; that might be worth trying?

@scottsthoughts thanks. The pair I tried are too thick around the top and low where the bottom of my pantlegs would not stay over them. Maybe I need to look for taller ones but hiking and biking seem to have opposite requirements for ankle flexibility.

@enobacon I went to Cabela's and got waterproof outdoor boots - "RedHead Mallard", I think. They ain't sexy, but they are rubber and have a tall cuff that tucks under your pant legs and are basically impervious to Portland weather.

They don't come in extra wide though, but I would look for something in a similar vein.

@yantor3d yeah I wonder who has such narrow long feet or if there's just always dumpsters full of shoes when they make 13 the width of an 8

@enobacon @yantor3d acktchually I made shoes for a while and most large feet were narrow

I recently bought shimano MW7 winter mountain bike shoes slightly used on eBay and the are the warmest things I've ever worn on a bike. 6 hours starting and ending in the low 30s, thin merino socks, not too many problmes. I think shimano has a wide version of this model

@crowdotblack @yantor3d I'm curious how those feet structurally work. Aero I guess, but I question the PSI & stability.

I had seen MW7s and the flap/ankle profile seems like the right idea for bike conditions, except for the cleat (though I guess clipless would reduce pedal strike on the supercargo) and I want to dress for not clomping around on super hard or chunky soles in the destination. Anyway I think I would need a 49 wide but that doesn't seem to be an option.

@enobacon I was told by an older (crunchy hippie type) cyclist that the super cheap old school way to windproof things is to stick your feet in plastic baggies inside your shoes. I never got around to trying it (I favored wool socks when I lived someplace cold) but it sounds legit?

@SRLevine @enobacon

The bike shop here sells gortex booties to go over your shoes. I was considering them and may go get them when it warms up a bit. My cold temp limit is 25 and we’re below that.

@MCDuncanLab @SRLevine the hole in the bottom for a cleat is the opposite of what you need for flat pedals though, which just shred the thin bottom piece.

@SRLevine @enobacon I've definitely put plastic bags over porous wool mitts and it worked very well

@enobacon I wear these waxed leather UGG boots. They are long discontinued, but they have thick wool linings and reflective mylar radiant barriers under that, too. Mine are actually a size too big (I wear Women's 11.5, my boots are Men's 11), but that just means I can easily add thick wool socks if I need more warmth. Usually, I just wear tights under insulated snow pants. I wish UGG would make these boots again so I could get them in Black.

@enobacon I wear Keen ankle boots with light insulation - they're not exactly the ones in this picture but similar. I have mine big enough to wear thick socks over thin ones.

@enobacon I made a mistake in December with the wrong shoes for a long ride (and my feet froze!) so I tested wearing my regular winter boots recently and it worked okay so I'll try for a longer ride this weekend.
